Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Burnley: Match preview
Will Wolverhampton Wanderers’ impressive form continue?
On Saturday, Wolves were held to a goalless draw by strugglers Norwich City at Carrow Road.
But, a week earlier, Bruno Lage’s side enjoyed an impressive 1-0 win over West Ham, in which Raúl Jiménez slotted home the game’s only goal.
So, overall, Wolves have only lost one of their last eight outings, amassing 17 points from a possible 24 in this time.
This has seen them climb from 16th up to sixth and, coming into this round of games, they’re just three points outside the Champions League places.
When Wolves lost their first three matches of the season, many were fearing that this new era under Lage wasn’t the right man for the job.
In four seasons under Nuno Espírito Santo, they won the Championship, finished seventh twice, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and Europa League quarters.
But, the early signs are that Lage is going to continue the good work done by his compatriot.
Will Wolves win a fourth successive top-flight home game for the first time in over 40 years?
Will Burnley win away?
As for Burnley, this’ll be their first match for 11 days.
The Clarets’ clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was postponed less than an hour before kick off due to the heavy snow at Turf Moor.
So, if nothing else, Sean Dyche and his players will be raring to go for this clash at Molineux.
Burnley are actually enjoyed a mini-unbeaten run at the moment, the only problem being that they’re drawing too many games.
Last time out, Ben Mee, Chris Wood and Maxwel Cornet all netted but it finished 3-3 as they took on Crystal Palace in Lancashire.
That as the highest-scoring Premier League game they’ve been involved in since their opening match of last season.
Thus, Burnley have only lost one of their last seven but have also only won one, beating Brentford 3-1 at the end of October.
Although, in fairness, this does include away draws at Leicester and Chelsea, Matěj Vydra snatching a late equaliser in the latter.
But, Dyche’s men are still in the relegation zone, three points behind Leeds and four adrift of Watford, albeit now with a game in hand.
Back in April, Chris Wood became the first New Zealander to score a Premier League hat-trick in a 4-0 demolition of Wolves at Molineux.
How the visitors would love a repeat as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone.
Wolverhampton Wanderers team news vs Burnley
At the start of Bruno Lage’s reign, Wolves were deploying a generally negative 5-4-1 but have tweaked this more recently to a 3-4-3.
It’s only a subtle difference but it’s had a tangible impact on results.
José Sá has started every Premier League game in goal this season, admirably filling the big void left by Portugal’s number one Rui Patrício.
Captain Conor Coady remains the key figure at the heart of the back three with Max Kilman and Romain Saïss either side.
Neither Willy Boly nor Yerson Mosquera have featured in the league this season, the latter has played just nine minutes since arriving from Atlético Nacional.
At wing-back, Rayan Aït-Nouri could keep his place ahead of the more conservative option of Marçal.
Nélson Semedo meanwhile is almost an ever-present on the right, only missing one league game this season and that was on the opening day.
In the middle, João Moutinho and Rúben Neves have been the linchpins ever since Wolves were promoted back to the top-flight in 2018.
But, Neves was shown his fifth yellow card of the season on Saturday so is suspended, meaning Leander Dendoncker will come in for this one.
In the inside-forward positions, despite the fact Daniel Podence has Covid-19 and Pedro Neto is injured, Lage does have options.
Two summer loan signings, Francisco Trincão and Hwang Hee-chan, from Barcelona and RB Leipzig, appear to be the first choice pair at the moment.
Trincão’s only goal so far came at Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup while Hwang has scored four league goals against Watford, Newcastle and Leeds.
These two are forcing Adama Traoré into cameo substitute appearances.
In attack meanwhile, Raúl Jiménez is back this season and has already scored three times, including the winner in Wolves’ last home game.
Will the Mexican fire his team to another victory at Molineux?
Burnley team news vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
As for Burnley, they’re in the odd position of having named a starting XI for a match at the weekend that ended up not taking place.
So, it stands to reason that the same XI will actually get to play this time.
Nick Pope will make his 118th Premier League appearance in goal, looking for his 40th clean sheet.
Centre-back James Tarkowski and midfielder Ashley Westwood thought they were going to be suspended on Sunday having picked up five yellow cards apiece.
But, their suspensions will now apply for this match.
So, Nathan Collins, who joined from Stoke for £12.5 million this summer, and Jack Cork will deputise respectively.
Josh Brownhill will be Cork’s midfielder partner; he himself is one booking away from a ban.
Out-wide, Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson will continue on the right with creative hub Dwight McNeil on the other side.
In attack, Maxwel Cornet has been a revelation since joining from Olympique Lyonnais in late-August.
The Côte d’Ivoire has already scored five goals in seven Premier League appearances.
He could join the small group of players who’ve scored 10+ Premier League goals for the club.
The current members are: Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes, Sam Vokes and Danny Ings.
One member of that list, Wood, will partner Cornet in attack with Jay Rodríguez, who’s on nine, and Matěj Vydra on the bench.
Ashley Barnes is still out.
