Betting prediction: Southampton 1 – 1 Leeds United

Southampton welcomes Leeds to St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday for this Premier League match.

‎The Whites have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 14 wins to Southampton’s 5, from their 26 encounters in the Premier League.

However, the vast majority of the games between these sides have come in domestic league games outside the Premier League as well as domestic cups. Leeds’ record is just as dominant across all competitions with 47 wins to Southampton’s 27 from 94 matches in this head-to-head.

Leeds come into this match having won each of the last 3 matches in this head-to-head, looking to make it 4-in-a-row for the first time since the 1920s.

Southampton vs Leeds United: Recommended bets

Leeds have already drawn 3 league matches this season, of which the last 2 came via a 1-1 scoreline. The last time there was a draw in Southampton in this head-to-head was back in 1995, which also finished with a 1-1 scoreline. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of Southampton 1 – 1 Leeds here is available at odds of 7.5/1.

2-1 Southampton win. Southampton’s last home victory over Leeds in the Premier League came back in 2004 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 10/1.

0-2 Leeds win. Leeds’ last visit to St Mary’s Stadium back in April finished in a 0-2 away win. You can back Leeds at 19/1 for the same 0-2 scoreline here on Saturday.

Under 2.5 goals. Last season’s match in Southampton produced under 2.5 goals. It was the 3rd time in the last 4 meetings in Southampton that this head-to-head threw up an under 2.5 goal game. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 2.2/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Patrick Bamford Goalscorer. Bamford (above) scored the opening and ultimately winning goals in both matches between these clubs last season. The 28-years-old forward, who picked up his first England cap earlier this season, is the 6/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 2.37/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against the Saints.

Southampton vs Leeds United: What are the betting odds?

The Saints are 1 of 4 Premier League sides still looking for a first win this season. They are 2.37/1 to take all 3 points from Leeds on Saturday.

Whereas, the Whites are 2.8/1 to pick up an away win at St Mary’s Stadium, taking it to 4 wins in a row in this head-to-head.

There have been very few draws when these sides meet. There have been none in any of the last 12 matches, and Southampton were still playing in the Dell when there was last a draw between them in Hampshire, back in 1995. Odds of 3.5/1 are available if you see Southampton and Leeds cancelling each other out on Saturday.

Southampton vs Leeds United: Match preview

It is far too early in the season to call this match a relegation 6-pointer.

However, the reality is that should either Burnley or Newcastle win this weekend, the loser of this match will find themselves in the bottom 3 come Monday morning.

No matter what happens for the rest of their tenure at their respective clubs, there is no doubt that Ralph Hasenhüttl and Marcelo Bielsa will remain cult heroes to the fans who chant their names.

For Southampton fans, there is an acceptance that Ralph’s job is a difficult one. Any time a star player emerges – from Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg to Danny Ings to Jannik Vestergaard – they are sold during the subsequent window to a club higher up the food chain.

Regardless of that, though, the Saints are not the only club in this position and ultimately Premier League survival must be maintained irrespective of the players who have departed.

Leeds’ problem is a very different one. They haven’t sold a player for a transfer fee since their promotion while also spending heavily in each of the last two seasons, averaging a net outlay of nearly £75m per year.

The vultures are circling, though, with Raphinha regularly linked with a move to Liverpool. Kalvin Phillips has also been linked with Manchester United while talks are ongoing to renew his contract to make the midfielder the club’s highest earner. Spurs reportedly enquired about Patrick Bamford when Harry Kane’s departure looked inevitable. Illan Meslier was reportedly a target for PSG prior to them signing Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.

Unlike many newly promoted sides, however, Leeds will feel that they are a massive club returning to the level they belong at. The club was one of the best in the world during the 1970s, and still has a massive fanbase as well as being the major club in England’s fourth-largest city.

Of course, staying in the Premier League is also paramount to whatever plans they have. However, the Whites won’t be thinking about cashing in on their stars but instead building a side that can give Bielsa a shot at competing with the top clubs again, as he did with Athletic Bilbao in La Liga and the Champions League.

Leeds need to win here to build on their victory last time out, which lifted them from the bottom 3. Southampton needs a first win of the season to start a run of form of their own and move clear of danger. Ultimately, we think they will end up cancelling each other out and sharing the points.

Southampton team news vs Leeds United

The Saints will be without James Ward-Prowse here following his red card against Chelsea prior to the international break. Stuart Armstrong is expected to start in place of Ward-Prowse in midfield.

Armando Broja returns to the side for the Saints after missing the Chelsea match due to the Premier League’s loan agreement prohibiting playing against your parent club. The 20-year-old striker is still awaiting his first start since joining on loan from the Blues, but has made 4 appearances from the bench.

Jack Stephens will likely be out for the remainder of 2021 having suffered an injury to the tendon in his knee against Manchester City.

Sam McQueen is still out with a ruptured cruciate ligament. Given the fact that he has been out for 3 years now, it is doubtful he will ever play again at a Premier League level.

William Smallbone is back training with the first-team squad but will need some time to regain his match fitness, and may need some reserve matches before being involved on Premier League matchdays again.

Che Adams (above) is a doubt due to a muscular injury. This means we are unlikely to see any changes in the forward line here with Theo Walcott, Nathan Tella, Nathan Redmond and Adam Armstrong all starting this match.

Leeds United team news vs Southampton

Raphinha’s absence will be sorely felt here. The 24-years-old winger has been in electric form and has 2 goals in his last 3 appearances for Leeds. He also wooed Brazilian fans with his trickery against Colombia during the international break. However, due to the kickoff time of Brazil’s final match, coupled with quarantine requirements when Raphinha returns to the UK, Leeds will be without the attacker here.

Robin Koch has missed Leeds’ last 6 games with a pelvic injury. No time frame has been provided yet for his return and the injury is being monitored game to game for improvement.

Luke Ayling is also ruled out with a knee injury. Ayling has had a simple surgery to solve the problem and now just requires some time to recover. Jamie Shackleton will continue in his absence at right-back for Leeds.

Adam Forshaw is still battling his way back to fitness after a long time out due to injury. He has been an unused sub a few times this season but is unfortunately out again with a thigh problem.

Crysencio Summerville missed the match against Watford with an unspecified illness. It is believed that he will also be missing for the trip to Southampton.

Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips both missed out on England duty this time around due to minor injuries. The pair face late fitness tests to be available for this match.
