Can Eddie Howe claim his first win as Newcastle United manager?

On Saturday, Howe was in the dugout for the first time after spending a week isolating in a hotel following a positive Covid-19 test.

However, his side offered very little and were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal with the goals coming in the space of nine second half minutes.

Jonjo Shelvey did hit the crossbar with a long-range effort at 0-0 but that was a close as they came.

In Howe’s first game as manager, albeit he wasn’t there in person, the Magpies drew 3-3 with Brentford at home.

Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin all scoring, but it wasn’t enough to secure all three points.

So, in the first game of the new era, defence was the problem but attack looks fine.

In the second, the defence continues to struggle while they’re also toothless in attack.

To summarise, there’s a lot of work to do for the side currently bottom of the table.

This though is a huge week for the Toon Army, as they face the other two teams in the bottom three, both at home, with Burnley visiting Tyneside on Saturday.

Newcastle simply need points from these two fixtures because, after that, they face Leicester, Liverpool, Man City and then Man United in succession.

They are the sixth different side in Premier League history who’ve failed to win any of their first 13 games; four of the previous five were relegated.

Will the only club in the Football League still without a win end that streak and climb off the foot of the table?

Will Norwich continue their unbeaten run?

As for Norwich City, they looked dead and buried not so long ago but could climb out of the bottom three by the end of the week.

In Daniel Farke’s last game, the Canaries ended their 20-match top-flight run without a victory, winning 2-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Then, Dean Smith made the perfect start to life in Norfolk, seeing his side come from a goal down to defeat Southampton at Carrow Road.

Teemu Pukki equalising before Grant Hanley headed home Billy Gilmour’s corner to secure all three points.

On Saturday, Norwich were looking to win three successive Premier League games for the first time in nine years but couldn’t quite manage it.

The Yellows drew 0-0 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at home which, in isolation, is a pretty impressive result.

But, Smith’s side need wins as they’re 19th, three points above Newcastle, and now just three points from safety.

Due to their goal difference being a very unfavourable -20, it would take a record breaking victory for Norwich to climb out the bottom three here.

Nevertheless, if they could win in Newcastle for the first time since 1988, drawing level with Leeds would be a huge psychological boost.

Will Norwich win a Premier League away game for the first time since downing Everton on 23 November 2019?

After a generally lacklustre display on Saturday, Eddie Howe has to decide whether to stick or twist in certain areas.

In goal, Newcastle have used three different goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, the only club to have used more than two.

Freddie Woodman was number one, then it was Karl Darlow before Martin Dúbravka made his first appearance of the campaign at the weekend.

Thus, the Slovakian number one is likely to get the nod once again.

At Arsenal, Howe deployed, ostensibly, a back four with Ryan Fraser dropping back in and Emil Krafth shuffling across to make it a five.

However, both Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles were shown their fifth yellow cards of the season in North London so both are suspended.

Former Norwich man Jamal Lewis will therefore come in at left-back with Ciaran Clark partnering Fabian Schär in the middle.

In midfield, when he arrived Joe Willock, of course, went on that ridiculous run, scoring in seven successive appearances during his loan period last season.

However, he’s yet to find the net in 12 appearances since making his move from Arsenal permanent.

Willock could start again alongside Jonjo Shelvey with the more defensive Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Jeff Hendrick on the bench.

Further forward, Miguel Almirón could come into the team in an attempt to add creativity.

Allan Saint-Maximin has completed more dribbles than anyone else in the Premier League this season, 45, but has scored just three goals.

If the Magpies are to stay up, they need their flamboyant Frenchman to improve his goal involvement figures.

In attack, Almirón’s return could see Joelinton back on the bench with Wilson leading the line.

He scored 41 Premier League goals under Howe at Bournemouth and will be another key figure in Newcastle’s survival bid.

Will the Toon Army be celebrating a first victory of the season?

As for Dean Smith, his team have played generally well since he took over so there’s no reason for him to change too much.

Tim Krul made 185 appearances for Newcastle but will be looking to keep them out this time.

In defence, Ozan Kabak is injured so Ben Gibson will continue to partner Grant Hanley, chosen over Andrew Omobamidele.

Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams appears to be first-choice left-back ahead of Dimitrios Giannoulis.

Since Smith has taken over, Billy Gilmour has been a central figure, in this 4-1-4-1, and has been man of the match in both games.

The man on loan from Chelsea will continue to anchor the midfield with Mathias Normann and Kenny McLean likely to be alongside again.

Further forward, Todd Cantwell is another players who’s been rebound since the change of management.

He and Milot Rashica could continue out-wide with Christos Tzolis and Przemysław Płacheta the other options.

Teemu Pukki will lead the line; the Finn has scored four of Norwich’s seven league goals this season so can he fire them to a vital win here?
