After a goal-fest in the Champions League, will Manchester City continue their winning run?

On Wednesday night, the Citizens welcomed RB Leipzig to the Etihad on matchday one of the Champions League group stages.

It ended up being the highest-scoring match in Man City’s European history, with the Premier League champions running out 6-3 winners.

Nathan Aké opened the scoring with a towering header before a comical own goal and then a Riyāḍ Maḥrez penalty had them 3-1 up by half-time.

Jack Grealish made it 4-1, cutting in from the left to curl home, before, just seconds after RB Leipzig got it back to 4-3, João Cancelo’s thunderbolt restored the cushion.

Angeliño was then sent off against his former club, for a stupid challenge, with Gabriel Jesus sealing the 6-3 win, tapping in from mere picometers out.

The Sky Blues’ next Champions League game is at Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain, so it was important to make a winning start.

Before then, will Pep Guardiola’s side make it four successive Premier League wins?

They’ve actually won their last three home league games 5-0, against Everton last season and Norwich and Arsenal this.

Thus, they could now become the first team to win four successive Premier League home matches by 5+ goals.

Since those two heavy victories, arguably more impressively, Man City have won 1-0 at Leicester, with Bernardo Silva getting the only goal.

This leaves the champions one point behind the four early front-runners: Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool.

Before a huge litmus test coming up next Saturday at Stamford Bridge, will Man City win again?

Will Southampton cause an upset?

As for Southampton, they’re still looking for their first league victory of the new campaign.

Last weekend, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side held high-flying West Ham to a goalless draw at St Mary’s.

Armando Broja came closest to a winner, hitting the post from a counter-attack.

That made it three successive draws for the Saints after a 1-1 with Manchester United and a 2-2 up at Newcastle.

James Ward-Prowse hit a 96th minute penalty in the latter.

But, going back to last season, this means that Southampton have won just four of their last 25 Premier League games, losing 16 of them.

This is certainly concerning form for the side who finished 15th last season.

After this, they will play Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup before welcoming Wolves in the league.

Those are more realistic opportunities for victories and, as sad as it is to say, they may just be travelling to the Etihad to keep the score down.

The Saints have actually only failed to score in one of their last 16 away league matches against Manchester City.

That came in a 2-0 defeat in 2015; Frank Lampard and Sergio Agüero the home side’s scorers, marking the former’s last goal in English football.

Southampton may score again this time but the problem will be keeping them out at the other end, highlighted by the fact that they lost 5-2 in this fixture last season.

Can Southampton pull off a huge shock?

Given that he has a ridiculous amount of talent at his disposal, Pep Guardiola can rotate from game to game and rarely sees a drop off in performance.

This makes his XIs hard to predict, but one guaranteed starter is Ederson in goal, especially with Zack Steffen out due to a positive Covid-19 test.

In defence, Nathan Aké was a a surprise inclusion in midweek but is likely to return to the bench with Rúben Dias and Aymeric Laporte rekindling their partnership.

Kyle Walker is also likely to return, possibly at João Cancelo’s expense.

In midfield, Rodri could continue as the holding midfielder with Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne seemingly first-picks further forward just now.

Phil Foden made his first appearance since Euro 2020 on Wednesday, coming on for 19 minutes, but he and İlkay Gündoğan could be on the bench again here.

Out-wide, on his debut in a UEFA club competition, Jack Grealish bagged a magnificent goal and an assist against RB Leipzig.

He could keep his place with Riyāḍ Maḥrez on the right and Ferran Torres through the middle.

Man City were unable to sign Harry Kane, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Håland, Robert Lewandowski or any centre-forward for that matter this summer.

But, Torres’ two goals so far this season suggest he could be the man to lead the line.

The Citizens also have Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus in reserve which isn’t bad given that they’ve scored 199 goals for the club between them.

Man City have scored 16 goals in three home matches so far this season, so will they blow somebody else away at the Etihad?

As for Southampton, as they aim to avoid being the ‘somebody else’ in this scenario, can Ralph Hasenhüttl come up with a winning formula?

Alex McCarthy remains the number one goalkeeper despite the continued presence of Fraser Forster.

At the back, they’ve seen a lot of change since last season with Jannik Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand leaving.

So, in the middle, Mohammed Salisu has established himself as first-choice, a year after joining from Real Valladolid, alongside Jack Stephens.

Lyanco is still awaiting his debut after arriving from Torino; this could come in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

At full-back, two more new arrivals will keep their places; Tino Livramento, who’s come in from Chelsea, and Romain Perraud, formally of Stade Brestois.

The former is currently keeping Kyle Walker-Peters on the bench.

In midfield, James Ward-Prowse remains as key as ever, alongside Oriol Romeu.

The captain has scored on his last two visits to the Etihad; the last visiting player to score in three-in-a-row was Tim Cahill (2008-10).

Further forward, in this Red Bull-style 4-2-2-2, the hard-working Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo could get the nod.

Stuart Armstrong is currently injured.

In attack, Ché Adams could come in alongside Adam Armstrong, who was bought this summer to fill Danny Ings’ rather large void.

This would see Mohamed Elyounoussi return to the bench, alongside Armando Broja.

Will it be a long afternoon for Southampton?
