Can anyone stop the seemingly unstoppable force that is Manchester City?

This’ll be just the second time that the Premier League’s 21st century powers meet as one and two in the table, the other coming six years ago.

Despite being next-door neighbours in the standings, they’re quite a distance apart and that gap could grow even larger come Saturday afternoon.

In their last league game, Pep Guardiola’s side came from behind to beat ten-man Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates on New Years’ Day.

Riyāḍ Maḥrez lashing home a penalty before Rodri bagged a stoppage time winner in North London.

Rarely for Man City, they’ve only played once in the subsequent fortnight and that was a leisurely stroll in Wiltshire on FA Cup third round weekend.

Goals from Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus, İlkay Gündoğan and teenager Cole Palmer swatted aside Swindon Town 4-1 last Friday night.

Back in the Premier League, the reigning champions have won 11 on the bounce so could be on course for a fourth title in just five seasons.

They have made a habit of becoming champions and, actually, have become accustom to beating the reigning European champions.

After wins over Liverpool in July 2020 and Chelsea in September, they could become just the fourth English club to win three successive matches against the champions of Europe.

This was also achieved by Notts County in 1982, Tottenham Hotspur 1984 and Everton a year later, back when English clubs dominated Europe.

More importantly, will Manchester City move a whopping 13 points clear of the chasing pack?

Can Chelsea close the gap at the top?

Chelsea meanwhile really need to win this one to keep their title hopes alive but travel to the north west in buoyant mood.

Their last league games was a barnstorming 2-2 draw with Liverpool, in which they came from 2-0 down with Mateo Kovačić and Christian Pulisic on target.

Since then, Thomas Tuchel’s team have made headway in both domestic cup competitions.

Last weekend, they hammered National League leaders Chesterfield in the FA Cup.

Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and Hakim Ziyech, from the penalty spot, all scoring.

Either side, they’ve faced Tottenham Hotspur twice in the two legged Carabao Cup semi-final.

Having comfortably won the first leg 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, they were firmly in the catbird seat for Wednesday’s return meeting.

This was only heightened when Antonio Rüdiger extended their lead in the tie with just 18 minutes on the clock, bundling the ball in.

At a restless Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite having two penalties and a goal overturned by VAR, Spurs never looked like mounting a comeback and 3-0 it finished.

So, the Blues are through to the Carabao Cup Final, meaning they’ve reached a final in 15 of the last 18 calendar years, only failing to do so in 2011, 2014, and 2016.

They’ve also become the first club in history to reach the final of at least one domestic English cup competition in six successive seasons.

With the UEFA Super Cup in the bag and the FIFA Club World Cup to come, Chelsea could end this season with six pieces of silverware.

Although, their Premier League title hopes could be essentially over if they’re beaten here.

Will the Blues beat the Sky Blues to keep the title race alive?

Manchester City are almost at full strength and their players will be rested as some of them have had a fortnight without a fixture.

Nathan Aké has started the last two league games at left-back but Kyle Walker could return to the XI with João Cancelo shifting across.

Oleksandr Zinchenko could also be available too after a spell out with Covid-19.

Kevin De Bruyne, as ever, will be key; he’s been directly involved in four goals in his last four league appearances against former side Chelsea.

Alongside, Bernardo Silva could keep his place as he’s been preferred to İlkay Gündoğan of late.

In attack, the only player they are missing is Riyāḍ Maḥrez who’s away with Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.

So, Gabriel Jesus, who scored the winner at Stamford Bridge, could start on the right.

On the other side, Raheem Sterling will be targeting his 50th league goal at the Etihad, only Sergio Agüero with 106 has more.

LONDON, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 23: Timo Werner of Chelsea during the UEFA Champions League group H match between Chelsea FC and Juventus at Stamford Bridge on November 23, 2021 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

Thomas Tuchel has actually deployed a back four in the last three cup games, possibly due to a shortage of centre-backs.

Although, with the unavailable list in this department shrinking, he could return to his default 3-4-3.

Thiago Silva, who enjoyed a cameo on Wednesday, could start this one after a spell out with Covid-19.

Likewise, in midfield, N’Golo Kanté could return, rekindling his partnership alongside Mateo Kovačić from the Liverpool game with Jorginho left out.

Up front, Tuchel has a plethora of options to choose from.

He could choose to use the same trio again with Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku joined by Timo Werner, who’s job is do run in behind.

But, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech are all viable alternatives with Werner’s place the one most under threat.
