Liverpool made light work of Chelsea last weekend and showed glimpses of why they cruised to the title last season.

Mikel Arteta has vastly improved Arsenal’s recent record against the top sides, but their last win at Anfield was back in 2012.

Couple that with Liverpool’s incredible run of form at Anfield and it’s difficult to see the Gunners getting a result.

Liverpool vs Arsenal: Match preview

Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield on Monday night in the first of two clashes between the sides in less than a week. Arsenal will be back at Anfield on Thursday for their Carabao Cup fourth-round tie.

Liverpool won their third match in a row on Thursday with a convincing 7-2 win over League One side Lincoln City. Last weekend the Reds beat 10-man Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to a Sadio Mane brace. Thiago Alcantara only played 45 minutes but made quite an impression on his new teammates.

Arsenal extended their 100% start to the season with a 2-0 away win in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Eddie Nketiah was on target for Arsenal. Last weekend the Gunners beat West Ham 2-1 at the Emirates with goals from Alex Lacazette and Nketiah.

Arsenal have won four out of four this season and six in a row stretching back to the back end of last season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have already gotten the better of Liverpool once this season, albeit in the Community Shield. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Arsenal before Takumi Minamino’s strike forced the match to a penalty shootout, which Arsenal won 5-4.

Arsenal also came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at the Emirates in July, although Liverpool had already been crowned champions at that point. Virgil van Dijk had one of his poorer matches and was at fault for the Arsenal goals scored by Reiss Nelson and Alexandre Lacazette. goals.

In their last clash at Anfield last October, the two sides played out an incredible 5-5 draw in the Carabao Cup. Liverpool went on to win the tie in a penalty shootout.

Liverpool’s recent home record is nothing short of outrageous. The Reds have won 26 of their last 27 Premier League matches at Anfield – scoring at least two goals in 25 of those matches. Their last home defeat in the Premier League was back in April 2017.

Monday’s game will be the 57th Premier League meeting between the two sides. Liverpool have got the better of the head-to-head statistics, with 21 wins, 19 draws and 16 defeats.

Liverpool team news vs Arsenal

After making 10 changes in midweek, Jurgen Klopp should revert to a starting eleven similar to the one which beat Chelsea. Virgil van Dijk was the only player to start against Chelsea and Lincoln City.

Club captain Jordan Henderson remains a doubt after picking up a hamstring injury last weekend. Henderson’s injury means that Thiago Alcantara should make his first start for the club.

Joel Matip has been ruled out until after the next international break, but Joe Gomez is fit and available following a knee injury.

Former Arsenal man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss out with a knee injury.

Arsenal team news vs Liverpool

Mikel Arteta made seven changes in midweek. Granit Xhaka and Alexandre Lacazette were unused substitutes, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given complete rest.

Arteta is expected to stick with five at the back – the system used to beat Liverpool twice in recent months. Ainsley Maitland-Niles could replace Bukayo Saka at left-wingback.

If fit, Kieran Tierney could play as one of three centrebacks, alongside Gabriel Magalhaes and David Luiz.

Despite scoring two in two, Eddie Nketiah may have to settle for a spot on the bench. Likewise, Nicolas Pepe looks to be behind Willian in the pecking order.

The Gunners could be without five first-team defenders. Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari all sidelined, while Cedric Soares remains doubtful.

Youngsters Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe are also out injured.
