After enjoying historic success in 2021, what will the start of a new year bring for Brentford?

In the first half of last year, the Bees played in a major cup semi-final for the very first time, narrowly losing in the League Cup at Spurs.

More importantly, they ended the Championship season unbeaten in 12 before beating Bournemouth and then Swansea City in the play-offs.

N0t only did that victory ensure Brentford are back in the top-flight after 74 years away, it ended their play-off hoodoo after nine failed campaigns.

On New Years’ Day 2022, Thomas Frank’s side sit 14th in the Premier League, despite the fact their form has deteriorated in recent months.

In midweek, Manchester City beat them 1-0 and, in truth, the champions had the Bees at arms length for the duration of the match.

That’s now three successive defeats following a mini-hiatus, losing 2-0 to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and at then at Brighton by the same scoreline.

In the Premier League, they’ve won just two of their last 11, only beating Everton and Watford, both at home, since 3 October.

Nevertheless, even after having two games postponed, they’re nine points clear of danger and that is more than satisfactory.

Will the supporters crammed into the Brentford Community Stadium be celebrating a home win to start 2022?

Will Aston Villa win away?

Aston Villa meanwhile continue to impress under Steven Gerrard.

Since he’s arrived from Rangers, Gerrard’s Villa have won four of seven fixtures, only losing to the current top three.

One of these defeats though did come on Boxing Day, going down 3-1 to Chelsea, despite taking a first half lead through a freak own goal.

Nevertheless, victories over Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Leicester and, most recently, Norwich leaves the Villans 12th in the table.

Aston Villa lost 21 Premier League games in 2021, ending 2020 fifth in but slumping down to 11th by the end of last season.

They were then all the way down in 16th when Dean Smith was relived of his duties.

Going forward, Gerrard’s aim will surely be to lead them back into Europe for the first time since a Europa League play-off defeat to Rapid Wien in 2010.

This’ll be the Claret & Blue Army’s first match for a week after their trip to Leeds, scheduled for last Tuesday, was postponed.

That extra rest could be key against a side who chased the champions around as recently as Wednesday.

The reverse fixture in August finished 1-1 with Ivan Toney and then Emi Buendía both scoring in the first 13 minutes of that one.

Overall, Villa are unbeaten in seven top-flight meetings with Brentford but haven’t beaten them in any competition since an FA Cup tie in 1953.

Will that change here?

BRENTFORD, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 16: Pontus Jansson of Brentford has his shot saved by Edouard Mendy of Chelsea during the Premier League match between Brentford and Chelsea at Brentford Community Stadium on October 16, 2021 in Brentford, England. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images)

After three tough games in the last 11 days, Thomas Frank would preferably like to rotate.

However, his squad is currently ravaged by injuries, meaning the majority of Wednesday’s starting XI will be asked to go again.

Álvaro Fernández will start for a tenth successive Premier League game, deputising for fellow Spaniard David Raya who’s a long-term absentee.

At the back, they’re also without summer signings Kristoffer Ajer and Mathias Jørgensen.

So, with no other senior options available, captain Pontus Jansson will be alongside Mads Bech Sørensen and Ethan Pinnock again.

At wing-back, Sergi Canós was surprisingly left on the bench in midweek but is likely to return at Mads Roerslev’s expense.

On the other side, with Rico Henry currently injured, Dominic Thompson, the man of the match from Wednesday, will start once more.

In the middle, Christian Nørgaard is likely to return after missing the Manchester City match due to yellow card accumulation.

Alongside, Frank Onyeka is also likely to start as this is the last game he’s available for before he jets off to AFCON to represent Nigeria.

Mathias Jensen could complete the trio with Shandon Baptiste missing out; Vitaly Janelt is unavailable.

In attack, they’re also now without Bryan Mbeumo who missed the Manchester City match with injury.

So, Yoane Wissa, who scored against Liverpool and West Ham earlier this season, will be Ivan Toney’s partner.

Marcus Forss, who’s this season’s Carabao Cup joint-top scorer with five, is the other option.

Will Brentford get back to winning ways?

As for the visitors, they’ll be hoping to have Steven Gerrard back in the dugout after he missed the Chelsea game following a positive Covid-19 test.

Wherever Gerrard is watching from, he’ll continue to pick Emi Martínez in goal.

In defence though, Tyrone Mings is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Chelsea last weekend.

So, Axel Tuanzebe will come into the back four, alongside Ezri Konsa, Matty Cash and Matt Targett.

In midfield, John McGinn could return, alongside Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey with Morgan Sanson dropping out.

Marvelous Nakamba is injured.

If Villa continue with this 4-3-1-2 formation, it allows Emi Buendía to operate behind a front two of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.

If Ashley Young and Leon Bailey are still unavailable, they’re likely to continue with this system.

Although, Bertrand Traoré, Trézéguet and Anwar El Ghazi are viable wide-man options.

Will Villa start 2022 with a victory?
