Aston Villa vs Leeds United: Match details

Match: Aston Villa vs Leeds United

Competition: Premier League

Date: February 9, 2022

Kick-off time: 8:00 pm, February 9, 2022 (UK time)

Stadium: Villa Park

Betting prediction: Aston Villa 2 - 2 Leeds United

Despite having a strong January window, Villa have won just one in five in all competitions and remain something of a work in progress under Steven Gerrard.

Leeds remain unpredictable after a brilliant 3-2 win over West Ham was followed by a frustrating defeat to Newcastle, but this game should provide entertainment if Leeds rediscover their touch in front of goal, with both sides suspect defensively.

Half Time/Full Time result: Draw - Aston Villa 4/1

Of the 40 goals conceded by Leeds so far this season, 65% of them have come in the second half, with the majority scored immediately after half-time. They have a tendency to keep things relatively tight in the first period before being caught out after the break, while Villa have scored 68% of their goals in the second half. If things go to form, they should fancy snatching the game late on.

Leeds to score a penalty 6/1

Only two teams - West Ham and Chelsea - have been awarded more penalties than Leeds so far this season, while on the other hand, only three teams have conceded more than Villa. Raphinha will fancy causing problems for Lucas Digne and Tyrone Mings off the left while if given a chance, Joe Gelhardt's direct style will also attract close attention inside the box.

Aston Villa vs Leeds United: Match preview

It has been a quiet few weeks for both sides after being knocked out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking, with neither side playing since January 22.

For Villa, that has been a frustrating wait after claiming their first win in four games with a 1-0 triumph over Everton courtesy of Emi Buendia's strike which did enough to pull them that bit further away from Leeds in the table.

The two-and-a-half week break should have done some good for Steven Gerrard's side however, giving the chance for the new signings to bed in and Gerrard to spend some time on the training ground following a brief break for the players.

Phillippe Coutinho was substituted early while on international duty for Brazil but should be okay to start against Leeds, whom Villa have enjoyed something of a mini rivalry with in recent years.

It has been rumbling ever since Mat Klich scored at Elland Road when Villa insisted the Poland international should have kicked it out after one of their players went down before Anwar El Ghazi was sent off following a melee, and Marcelo Bielsa instructed his players to concede a goal from kick-off to try and appease the Villa management.

Honours were even last season with an away win apiece, but Villa are a new side this season with a change in management and there will be keen eyes on how Gerrard deals with the Bielsa question for the first time.

There is no doubt Villa are deemed to have had the stronger of the seasons to date and are only about one or two wins away from safety but a defeat could see Leeds close the gap to just a point.

Having been flirting with the drop all season, the visitors will think they are just about finding their best football of the campaign - the defeat to Newcastle undid a lot of good work done in previous weeks - and will fancy their chances of finishing the season strongly with players returning.

Aston Villa team news vs Leeds United

With Marvelous Nakamba the only long-term injury absentee, Gerrard should have a near full-strength squad to choose from to face Leeds.

Nakamba remains out until April while Leon Bailey has been the other player missing, and although this game could come too soon for him he could be fit to play at the weekend.

Trezeguet and Bertrand Traore will be back from AFCON duty but again are unlikely to be rushed straight back into the side, meaning Gerrard is likely to name an unchanged XI to the one that beat Everton 1-0.

Leeds United team news vs Aston Villa

Bielsa admitted on Monday that Bamford was no closer to a return from a foot problem, leaving Dan James as the likely man to continue leading the line despite the presence of Joe Gelhardt breathing down his neck - though further recovery from his own injury could push the teenager's claims for a starting spot.

The good news for Leeds fans is that Charlie Cresswell, Jamie Shackleton and crucially Adam Forshaw have all been passed fit to return but along with Bamford, they will have to wait a bit longer to see Junior Firpo, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper ready for action.
