Arsenal target a new central defender
At the end of November, Arsenal confirmed the signing of one of the most highly rated scouts in European football: Sven Mislintat.
Signed from Borussia Dortmund, Mislintat has already been credited with finding some super players, including Robert Lewandowski, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele.
According to a report from French website RMC Sport, Mislintat’s number one target since arriving at Arsenal is Mainz defender Abdou Diallo.
Arsenal are interested in the 21-year-old central defender and have already contacted Mainz regarding Diallo.
Who is Abdou Diallo?
Diallo came through the ranks at Monaco but joined Mainz this past summer.
As captain of the France Under-21 side, it seems inevitable that plenty of big clubs will be interested in signing Abdou Diallo.
The Mainz defender is also good in attacking situations and scored for his club in the DFB Pokal against Stuttgart on Tuesday night.
Mislintat is keen on Diallo
Diallo left Monaco for Mainz last summer for a paltry six million euros.
Mislintat has been impressed with Diallo’s performances at Mainz and has already recommended him to Arsenal.
The Gunners do seem short in central defence, despite often utilising three centre backs.
With Per Mertesacker retiring, Laurent Koscielny suffering from an achilles problem and Shkodran Mustafi both injury prone and not amazingly convincing, Arsenal could well move for new defenders.
Arsenal contact Mainz
RMC Sport add that Arsenal have been in contact with Mainz already regarding Abdou Diallo.
There is very little chance of Diallo leaving in January, having just arrived in Germany.
Mainz will though likely sell Diallo in the event of a substantial offer next summer.
