Portugal boss Santos speaks out on future after World Cup heartbreak

Fernando Santos, head coach of the Portuguese national team, has, late on Thursday, provided an update on his future on the bench.

Santos, of course, guided his home country back into action a short time ago.

Fresh off a dominant downing of Switzerland in the Last-16, Portugal went head to head with World Cup surprise package Morocco, eyeing a spot in the competition’s semi-finals.

When all was said and done, however, an altogether underwhelming display ultimately culminated in the favourites being sent packing, owing to a 1-0 defeat.

Youssef En-Nesyri made the difference on the night, rising highest to nod beyond the stranded Diogo Costa, and break Portuguese hearts across the globe in the process.

On the back of what proved a deeply disappointing showing on the part of his side, questions, in turn, have inevitably already begun to spread surrounding the future of Fernando Santos.

Speaking post-match on Saturday, though, Santos was keen to keep his cards close to his chest, in explaining:

“Tomorrow I will fly to Lisbon and we will discuss with the president about my future, as always.”
