Once a blue, always a blue – Fikayo Tomori celebrates Chalobah’s debut Chelsea goal

 

Former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori has this evening taken to social media, to react to the surprise goalscoring exploits of Trevoh Chalobah versus Crystal Palace.

Thomas Tuchel’s men were of course back in action a short time ago.

The Blues, brimming with confidence on the back of a European Super Cup triumph during the week, kicked off their Premier League campaign in a derby meeting with Palace.

Chelsea headed into proceedings as overwhelming favourites to bag all three points, having looked a team reborn since Tuchel’s arrival back in January.

And, when all was said and done in West London on Saturday, get their season off to a winning start is precisely what the Pensioners managed.

Marcos Alonso opened the game’s scoring inside half an hour, bending a sumptuous free-kick beyond the helpless Vicente Guaita:

Christian Pulisic then added a Chelsea 2nd shortly before the interval, essentially killing off any hope of a Palace comeback before the break had even been reached.

Tomori reacts

Without doubt the afternoon’s standout moment, though, arrived with 58 minutes on the clock.

After picking the ball up inside the visitors’ half, defender Trevoh Chalobah, on his Premier League debut in Chelsea colours, drove forward before lashing a pinpoint daisy-cutter in off the base of the far post from 20 yards:

This capped off another fine display on the part of the Blues’ young stopper, marking an altogether special occasion for a player who made his way through the youth ranks in West London.

In turn, on the back of Chalobah’s stunning strike finding the net, it came as little surprise to see a former teammate of the 22-year-old quickly make clear his delight.

The player in question? Fikayo Tomori.
