Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has taken to Instagram to admit that the Blues ‘haven’t played to the level we expect’ but promised to ‘make you proud’ come the end of the season following another defeat under Graham Potter.
The west London side fell to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday night in a game that could have been far more damaging had Eddie Howe’s side managed to convert their dominance into more clear-cut chances.
It means that, after a strong start under Graham Potter, they have now gone five Premier League games without a win, and head into the winter break in 8th place, eight points behind fourth-place Tottenham who currently occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.
And Mount has not escaped criticism either, with the Englishman last having registered a goal or an assist in their last win over Aston Villa almost a month ago.
Picked in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for the upcoming tournament in Qatar, Mount was substituted with 20 minutes to go with his side chasing a goal against Newcastle and has now taken to Instagram to share his frustrations.
“We haven’t played to the level we expect of ourselves as Chelsea”, the Englishman began.
Chelsea do not play again until December 27th, when they face newly promoted Bournemouth, and Graham Potter will hope that he can enjoy something akin to a pre-season with those not going to the World Cup in the coming month.
