England defender Jarell Quansah will miss England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final after he was given a two-match ban.
The former Liverpool man filled in at right-back against Mexico and was sent off for a poor challenge on on Jesus Gallardo early in the second half.
England held on to win 3-2 and move into the last eight but Quansah has now been given an extra game on his suspension by FIFA.
There is no mechanism in FIFA’s rules for the 2026 tournament for teams to appeal against red cards, but the FA had been considering its options over the sanction.
Quansah would be available to play in the World Cup final should Thomas Tuchel’s side make it all the way.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee invoked Article 27 of their code to suspend the ban of USA striker Folarin Balogun for a one-year probationary period, allowing Balogun to start against Belgium in Seattle.
That moved stirred controversy across the globe, with former USA goalkeeper Brad Friedel telling 101greatgoals.com that ‘politics and sport don’t mix.’
The former Aston Villa keeper said: “They need to stay away. There needs to be an integrity and a purity around sport, and they don’t need to intertwine with.”
England have struggled at right-back throughout the tournament with Tuchel hoping that Chelsea captain Reece James will be fit to play on Saturday.
