Manchester United ready to rival Liverpool for Ligue 1 defensive star

The two sides are set to go head to head in the transfer market

Manchester United and Liverpool are prepared to fight it out to land Ligue 1 defender and former Barcelona centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo this summer, according to reports from France.

The two sides are both on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer as they look to move on from previous stalwarts.

Both Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are thought to be keen on moving on from Old Trafford due to a lack of playing time, while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez could both leave Liverpool after a series of underwhelming outings this season.

It means that both sides will be looking for alternatives, and they have been impressed with Todibo, who has rebuilt his career following a disappointing spell at Camp Nou.

The French defender joined Barcelona from Toulouse in 2019, but made just 5 appearances and, after several loan spells away, joined Nice on a permanent transfer in 2021.

He has since impressed, and has started all but two games for the French side this campaign, leading to speculation that it may be time for him to move on.

Valued at 30m euros by transfermarkt, and under contract until 2027, he would not come cheap, though negotiations would perhaps be easier with Manchester United should Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe be successful in his bid to buy the Red Devils too.

A move for Todibo, however, would end any pursuit of Jurrien Timber, who earlier this week revealed that a move was edging closer, though it is unclear with who.
