Manchester City vs Southampton betting tips: Premier League match preview and predictions

Manchester City vs Southampton prediction: Manchester City 5-0 Southampton

Just four days after their Carabao Cup clash at the Etihad, Manchester City and Southampton go head-to-head once again.

On Tuesday, Manchester City eased to a 3-1 win over Southampton to book their place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Nicolás Otamendi opened the scoring before a brace from Sergio Agüero put Man City in cruise control.

Jack Stephens did pull one back for the visitors but it was mere consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

Anything other than a repeat of a big home win would be a major surprise.

Gabriel Jesus has only failed to score in home games against English opposition, that he has started, once in 2019. The Brazilian is 13/5 to open the scoring and 4/11 to maintain that statistic.

Raheem Sterling has also been on fire. He is 3/1 to score first and 7/10 to score anytime.

Danny Ings meanwhile is Southampton’s top scorer. He is 12/1 to break the deadlock and 16/5 to score anytime.

Both Sterling and Sergio Agüero to score is 8/5.

Both David Silva and Bernardo Silva to score is 5/1.

Both Kevin De Bruyne and Sterling to score is also 5/1.

Both Nathan Redmond and Ings to score is 33/1.

Manchester City appear to be back in top form despite some recent hiccups.

Their victory on Tuesday means they are now unbeaten in 14 League Cup matches, since losing at Old Trafford in 2016.

The last side to go on a longer unbeaten run were Chelsea between 2004 and 2008.

In the Premier League, they eased past Aston Villa last weekend.

Raheem Sterling, David Silva and İlkay Gündoğan all struck after the interval in a 3-0 victory.

That means Pep Guardiola’s side remain six points behind Liverpool.

Next weekend, the travel to Anfield in an absolutely massive game.

First though, they need to make sure the gap remains, at most, at six points.

Will the Citizens swat aside Southampton once again?

Another drubbing for Southampton?

As for the Saints, it’s fair to say it has not been a good week for them.

The saddest thing in mid-week was that they were probably relieved to only ship three at the Etihad.

Although, that was understandable given their result before.

Ten minutes into their Friday night clash with Leicester, they let in a goal and had Ryan Bertrand sent off by VAR for a foul in the build up.

That was the third time in a row in a Premier League fixture against Leicester they have had a man sent off, only the second time that’s happened in the league’s history.

However, if the home fans thought that was bad it was only going to get a whole lot worse.

Leicester were 5-0 up by half time before going on to smash all kinds of records, leaving St Mary’s 9-0 winners.

That was the joint-biggest Premier League win ever and the biggest top-flight away win in the 131-year history of English football.

In the context of this season it saw Southampton drop into the relegation zone on just eight points and with a goal difference of  -16.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side have only amassed one point from their last five and could be in serious trouble.

Next weekend they host Everton but are likely to go into that still on eight points and with an even worse goal difference.

Pep Guardiola did make changes on Tuesday night but, even with a trip to San Siro to come mid-week, will be at full strength for this one.

Claudio Bravo started on Tuesday but Ederson will be back in for this one.

In defence, Oleksandr Zinchenko has joined Aymeric Laporte in the treatment room.

Fernandinho is back though after serving his one-match ban in the League Cup and will start at centre-back.

Nicolás Otamendi will keep his place alongside him with João Cancelo and Benjamin Mendy coming back in.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Eric García and Angeliño will be left out.

In midfield, Rodri is still out with a hamstring injury.

Phil Foden and the even more inexperienced Thomas Doyle started in the Carabao Cup but both will drop out here.

İlkay Gündoğan will anchor the midfield with David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne ahead of him.

On the right, Riyad Mahrez could get the nod over Bernardo Silva.

On the other side, Raheem Sterling has now scored 13 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions this season, more than any other Premier League player in 2019/20.

Up front, as Sergio Agüero started on Tuesday, despite netting a brace, it’s likely to be Gabriel Jesus for this one. The Brazilian also played in that match, but crucially was given a small rest at the end of the Carabao Cup match.

Whoever, plays, Southampton should get blown away.

As for Southampton, Ralph Hasenhüttl made a few changes but not a lot.

It’ll be interesting to see who he goes with here after two heavy defeats.

This includes in goal; despite conceding nine against Leicester, Angus Gunn is expected to come in for Alex McCarthy.

In defence, it’ll certainly be more like a back five then a back three.

Jack Stephens stared on Tuesday but could drop back out again.

Maya Yoshida and Jannik Vestergaard are likely to come in, joining Jan Bednarek at centre-back.

At left-back Ryan Bertrand is serving the second of his three-match ban.

So, Kevin Danso will shift from the centre in his absence; Yan Valery will be on the other side.

Cédric Soares is out with a calf problem

In midfield, captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg will be joined by Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse.

Stuart Armstrong will go back to the bench.

Further forward, Danny Ings has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games.

Nathan Redmond will partner their top scorer with Shane Long and Sofiane Boufal dropping out.

It appears to be a question of how many but can this side pull off a massive shock?
