Liverpool vs Chelsea betting tips: UEFA Super Cup match preview & predictions

Liverpool vs Chelsea prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Chelsea

The Champions of Europe Liverpool meet Europa League winners Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul.

Liverpool have won this title three times, in 1977, 2001 and 2005, and have been losing finalists twice.

Only three clubs have lifted this trophy on more occasions than the Reds.

Chelsea meanwhile have only ever won one Super Cup and that was in 1998 but they were beaten in this final twice, in 2012 and then again a year later.

Who will come out on top in this all Premier League affair at Kartal Yuvası (the Eagle’s Nest) in Istanbul?

Liverpool got off to a flier in the Premier League.

The Reds kicked off their league campaign against Championship Champions Norwich City on Friday night at Anfield.

An own goal followed by goals from Salah, van Dijk and Origi saw them 4-0 up at half time.

That’s the first time a side has scored four goals in the first half of an opening-day match in the Premier League for 13 years.

Norwich did pull one back in the second half but 4-1 it finished.

Jürgen Klopp’s side have already played for one piece of silverware this season in the FA Community Shield.

Joël Matip’s late header helped them earn a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Wembley so the curtain-raiser went to penalties.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the unfortunate man to miss as Man City won the shootout 5-4.

Nevertheless, Liverpool could still win as many as six trophies this season so can they claim the first of those at Beşiktaş’ stunning stadium in Istanbul?

Will Chelsea bounce back?

As for Chelsea, they got off to the worst possible start to life under Frank Lampard at the weekend.

The club’s all time record goalscorer is now the manager but things did not go to plan at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Blues were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United; their heaviest opening-day defeat in their 104th season in league football.

However, that does not tell the whole story.

Chelsea had 18 shots to Man United’s 11.

But, it was poor decision making in both boxes that cost them.

Chelsea need to improve and quickly so can they get a much needed moral boosting win here?

Liverpool team news vs Chelsea

Despite the fact they face Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday, Jürgen Klopp will name a strong team for this one.

The one negative from the win over Norwich was the injury to Alisson.

Brazil’s number one is anticipated to be out for up to two months with a calf injury.

So, Adrián, who joined on a free from West Ham United just last week, will deputise in goal.

The rest of the team is likely to be uncharged from Friday.

After showing some defensive frailties, Klopp may be tempted to bring in Joël Matip, move Joe Gomez to right-back and bring out Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, Alexander-Arnold offers so much going forward he may well keep his place.

He has now registered an assist in five successive Premier League games across this season and last.

Liverpool certainly have options in midfield but Fabinho, Henderson and Wijnaldum appear to be the first choice trio right now.

But, as each side can name up to 12 substitutes in this one, Milner, Keïta, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lallana will all be on the bench.

Up front, Sadio Mané is unlikely to start as he’s only just back from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Although he did play 16 minutes against Norwich off the bench.

Origi will continue to fill in for him alongside Firmino and Salah.

Dejan Lovren has not been named in the Liverpool travelling squad, with the Croatian defender set for a move to Italian side AS Roma.

Will this Liverpool team prove to be too strong for a disjointed Chelsea?

As for Chelsea, despite a very disappointing performance on Sunday, they’re not expected to make wholesale changes for this one.

Although, the 48 hours extra rest Liverpool have had could be a major factor.

Kepa Arrizabalaga will once again be in goal.

With Reece James and Antonio Rüdiger still injured, it’s likely to be the same back four.

Kurt Zouma, despite a poor performance at Old Trafford, is expected to keep his place ahead of the very inexperienced Fikayo Tomori.

Emerson Palmieri appears to be the first choice left-back ahead of Marcos Alonso.

In midfield, N’Golo Kanté was not fit enough to start in Manchester.

He’s unlikely to start this one either so it will once again be Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić in the deeper midfield roles.

Further forward, they do have more options.

Ross Barkley was bright at the weekend so should keep his place.

Willian missed that game through injury but is back in contention although he isn’t expected to start.

However, Christian Pulisic is likely to get be named in the XI for Chelsea for the first time at Mason Mount’s expense.

Up front, does Lampard stick or twist?

He’s likely to keep the faith with Tammy Abraham who got into good positions at the weekend without taking any of his chances.

Olivier Giroud will be on the bench once more.

Can this side cause an upset and leave Turkey with the UEFA Super Cup?
