‘It was an obvious choice to leave’: Olivier Giroud opens up on decision to depart Chelsea

Olivier Giroud’s Chelsea stint

Olivier Giroud would join Chelsea from London rivals Arsenal in January of 2018.

The Blues are understood to have paid around £15m for the striker, which turned out to be a pretty decent deal.

Despite never really being used as Chelsea’s main no.9 on a consistent basis, Giroud still notched 119 appearances across all competitions for the Londoners.

In said ties, the Frenchman would score 39 goals and provide 14 assists. Giroud also played key roles in Chelsea winning the FA Cup, Europa League and, most recently, the Champions League.

Giroud explains decision to leave Chelsea

Following the 2020/21 campaign, Giroud would then extend his deal at Chelsea in June, so he did not leave for free:

Despite only extending his deal with Chelsea in early June, Giroud then signed for AC Milan in July of 2021.

And now, the 34-year-old has opened up on his decision to leave Chelsea, stating that it was an obvious choice:

“I liked the Premier League, but at some point, I had to make a decision.

“I told [Thomas] Tuchel that the last three months had been too difficult.

“It was an obvious choice to leave Chelsea, I moved on with great emotion for all the moments we experienced. Some were good, some others not so much, but we won three important titles.”

Giroud has since become a fairly regular feature in Milan, though he did miss three games due to injury.

Despite this, the veteran forward has scored two in three Serie A games this term.
