Gary Neville questions decision for Jesse Lingard to remain at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard nets winner against West Ham

In almost poetic fashion, Jesse Lingard came off the subs bench to net the winner for Manchester United against West Ham, where he spent the latter end of last season on loan.

Although Lingard refused to celebrate in front of his former fans, he could not help the fact that his goal took a valuable point away from the hammers.

With Bruno Fernandes in front of the Englishman in the pecking order, it was something of a surprise to see him remain in Manchester this summer. The additions of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to the stable of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s forwards have pushed the 28-year-old further down the pecking order, with just 12 months left on his contract.

Gary Neville questions decision to stay

Speaking on the Sky Sports Football podcast on Sunday, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville questioned why Lingard decided to stay, saying:

‘I still maintain he should’ve left but he will have his moments.

‘I was happy to see how he bounced back after what happened in Europe in midweek.

‘To bounce back and score the winner is a fantastic moment for him. He’s got good character, he’s a very good player and I feel he should be playing 40-45 games a season.

He continued, however, by pointing out that Lingard’s loss in terms of appearances will be United’s gain when it comes to squad depth:

‘He won’t get that at United in terms of 90-minute starts but he’s one of those players that I do feel United will benefit from having.

‘I just thought for Jesse himself, he should’ve left. United could be a better team with someone like Lingard in it.’

Is Neville right, or was Lingard right to stay in Manchester?
