Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak scored inside nine second-half minutes as Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-player Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium and move fifth in the Premier League.
Keane Lewis-Potter headed in Igor Thiago’s first-half delivery for the Bees, whose task became considerably tougher when Yehor Yarmolyuk was dismissed during first-half added time for headbutting opposition defender Jeremy Jacquet.
Bradley Barcola collected Florian Wirtz’s perceptive pass, cut inside the box and rolled in the equaliser after the restart, then nodded the ball down for Isak to strike from close range for the winner.
New signing Barcola shot against the crossbar with 11 minutes remaining and Brentford’s Vitaly Janelt received a second booking in the 92nd minute as Liverpool won for the second time in three days following their 6-3 victory at Austrian side LASK in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Brentford vs Liverpool: Isak goal ‘superb play’
Dominik Szoboszlai made way through injury before Brentford’s goal left Liverpool facing successive league defeats following their 3-0 loss at home to Manchester City on Sunday.
Midfielder Yarmolyuk’s exit proved a turning point, although Liverpool might have backed themselves to win against 11 players with the help of a £361 million forward trio in Isak, Wirtz and Barcola
“It is superb center-forward play,” former Premier League striker Glenn Murray told BBC Radio 5 Live of the Sweden international’s goal.
“Touch, finish – quick as you like. The goalkeeper [Caoimhin Kelleher] can’t get set and it’s in the back of the net.
“Top-class from Alexander Isak. He hasn’t really been in the game too much, but that is the sign of a top centre-forward when you’re starved of attention – when you haven’t had the ball much – and then you just burst into life.
“It’s a wonderful touch. Right foot just to keep it under control, left foot – in the same stride – back across into the far corner.”
