A second-half substitute hat-trick for RC Lens’ Loïs Openda highlights another action-packed weekend of football across the top leagues on continental Europe

Girona remains just outside the bottom three in La Liga but can take solace in their spirit after a 1-1 away draw against champions Real Madrid, with shot-stopper Paulo Gazzaniga standing tall in goal to help the club keep fighting week to week.

CB: Castello Lukeba (Olympique Lyonnais)

Olympique Lyonnais and young footballing talent remain synonymous with one another after 19-year-old Lyon native Castello Lukeba completed 90-minutes in a 1-0 win at home against LOSC Lille on Sunday night and looked a natural throughout.

LB: Alfonso Espino (Cádiz Club de Fútbol)

Cádiz earned a fantastic 3-2 win at the weekend against visiting Atlético Madrid as the club fights for its La Liga future while sitting in the relegation zone, with Uruguayan left-back Alfonso Espino playing his part expertly with two assists in a memorable win.

CM: Hakan Çalhanoglu (Football Club Internazionale Milano)

Formerly one of the brightest attacking talents to ever emerge from Turkey, Hakan Çalhanoglu has gone through something of a rebirth at Inter this season in a deeper role than in his earlier days. His goal at the weekend was a throwback to such times in an all-around excellent performance.

CM: Maximilian Arnold (Verein für Leibesübungen Wolfsburg)

Maximilian Arnold remains one of the darlings of VfL Wolfsburg after a long career at Volkswagen Arena while he continues to be a focal point for Die Wölfe, with a brilliant weekend performance at the weekend with a brace of assists as Wolfsburg are now unbeaten in five.

RW: Vincenzo Grifo (Sport-Club Freiburg)

Now unquestionably a club icon and cult hero at the foot of the Black Forest, Vincenzo Grifo continues to be the standard bearer for SC Freiburg after scoring two goals this weekend and helping Christian Streich’s men keep pace in the Bundesliga title race.

LW: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli)

Georgian sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia continues to prove the heir apparent to Lorenzo Insigne as the summer signing added a goal and a brace of assists to his 2022-23 CV, taking his tally for the season to 8 goals and 10 assists across 16 appearances on all fronts. Stellar.

CF: Loïs Openda (Racing Club de Lens)

Belgian striker Loïs Openda arrived in Lens this summer and has already repaid part of his transfer fee paid by the northern France outfit, and a hat trick as a second-half substitute against Toulouse was as good as any moment in his young career.

CF: Victor Osimhen (Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli)

Nigerian international striker Victor Osimhen continued to endear himself to the Napoli faithful this weekend after bagging a hat-trick against visiting Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio, taking his tally in Serie A for the season to a league-leading seven goals. Reliable as ever.
