Arteta to open up on Ozil

Mesut Ozil and his time at Arsenal is coming to an end after the player travelled to Turkey to seal his deal with Fenerbahce. The former German international ends a seven-plus year stint at Arsenal after arriving from Real Madrid in 2013.

The latter years of his time at the club have not been the most encouraging or harmonious between himself, the club and even a portion of the fan base. He was omitted from the Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the season and Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, said that this was purely down to ‘football reasons.’

“Everybody is free to express his feeling,” he said. “What I can say from my side is that it is just a football decision. My conscience is very calm because I have been really fair with him. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other.”

Now that the saga appears to be coming to an end, Mikel Arteta has spoken about the German’s departure from the club and noted that he would speak about the deal more openly once it has been completed.

“Well, Mesut is in Turkey and he’s going through the medical which has to be completed and there is some paperwork that has to be done. But it doesn’t matter, Mesut’s quality will be missed because he is a very special player that had a big history in this football club. And the deal, when it happens, I will give my clear opinion on that,” said Arteta after the 3-0 win over Newcastle

Mustafi’s cryptic message

There is no doubt that Mesut Ozil was a popular figure within the dressing room and was a well-liked player amongst much of the squad. This has been evident in a number of messages which have been sent to Ozil since the announcement of his departure became public.

One such message came from German defender Shkodran Mustafi. He wrote a message on his Twitter and Instagram pages noting that he felt the side had not supported Ozil in the moments he most needed them.

“Bro, you have been the most unselfish player on and off the pitch, I have ever shared the dressing room with. You will be always remembered as the #AssistKing. Unfortunately we as a team haven’t been able to assist you when you needed us the most. All the best,” he wrote.

Mustafi himself is close to an Arsenal exit with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Arteta though seemed to confirm previously that the German would remain at the club beyond the end of the January window and would be used as backup in the central defensive area.

“His future right now is here,” the Spaniard said of Mustafi. “I’m trying to help. We have Papa that probably is going to leave the club in this window, William that has already gone on loan, so we don’t have that many right now.”

“Gabriel’s been out now for a period, David (Luiz) has been injured, so the situation is completely different to before.”

With just under 2 weeks left of the window, there is not long for Arsenal to conduct any further business both regarding incomings and outgoings.
