Arsenal’s preseason gets off to worst start

Arsenal’s pre-season got off to the worst possible start with a 2-1 defeat to Scottish side Hibernian.

A group of players from both the senior side and the academy made the trip to Scotland for their two games against both Hibs and Rangers.

The next match is on Saturday but Mikel Arteta will have a lot of work to do on the training ground after his side were comfortably beaten by the 3rd place finishers in the Scottish Premiership last year.

A goalkeeping error from academy stopper Arthur Okonkwo and poor defending from a corner let Hibs take a 2-goal lead. A late strike from Emile Smith-Rowe gave some hope of a comeback but it wasn’t to be. Two free-kicks hit the post, Nicolas Pepe missed a penalty and Eddie Nketiah missed a one-on-one.

After the match Mikel Arteta spoke of his disappointment at the result.

“Well I’m always disappointed when we lose a football match but it is the first game, we played with many kids and we only had four training sessions. We’ve trained really hard and you could see that the players were a little bit leggy,” he said.

“I think we conceded the first goal, an accident, and the second goal was clearly offside. We created many, many chances but we didn’t score. That’s what pre-season is for, to take the things that we haven’t done well into a training session and then improve.”

Tierney cuts short holiday to join group

Arsenal fans were however treated to some good news regarding Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney.

Having played at the Euros this summer, players have been granted a period of holiday to rest and recuperate.

Granit Xhaka, Bernd Leno and Bukayo Saka are all still off on their extended rest having all reached the knockout stages with Switzerland, Germany and England respectively.

Despite being eliminated in the group stage with Scotland, Tierney was not yet expected to rejoin the group however was present in training pictures today in his homeland.

It has been revealed that Tierney decided to cut his holiday short to get back to the squad early.

Tierney has always been looked upon as a committed member of the group and even touted as a future captain. These actions will only reaffirm the adoration from the supporter base for the player.

Could the prospect of playing against his former club Celtic’s main rivals Rangers have something to do with it? The full-back was early back to training but an appearance on Saturday would be very impressive… maybe to a worrying degree.

Recovery and rest is key but Tierney has proven time and time again to be a different breed.
