An Aubameyang tribute, Saka making history and City back on top – Takeaways from Tuesday’s PL action

Laca & Saka grab the headlines

First up was Arsenal’s trip to St. Mary’s to face Southampton.

The matchup of course marked a rematch from the weekend, when the two sides went head to head for a spot in the 5th-round of the FA Cup.

On that occasion, it was the Saints who eventually emerged victorious, by a goal to nil.

Tonight, though, Mikel Arteta’s men bounced back, to secure a crucial 3 points.

The evening’s scoring was opened inside 3 minutes, when a pre-planned set-piece saw James Ward-Prowse pick out Stuart Armstrong for a wonderful first-time finish from the edge of the area:

Arsenal, though, to their credit, did not appear at all rattled after falling behind, and quickly worked their way back into proceedings.

Nicolas Pepe was the man to level things up, latching onto Granit Xhaka’s defence-splitting pass before picking out the far corner of the hosts’ goal.

Bukayo Saka then turned the clash on its head 5 minutes before the interval, rounding Alex McCarthy in typically confident fashion, before slotting home into the empty net:

And a thoroughly impressive display on the part of Arteta’s visitors was rounded out 20 minutes from time, when a wonderful team move saw Cedric Soares pick out that man Saka on the right, with Arsenal’s prodigious wide-man having gone on to tee up Alexandre Lacazette for the easiest of finishes:

Lacazette’s subsequent celebration after finding the net, meanwhile, has since gone viral on social media, with the Frenchman having seemingly paid tribute to strike partner and close friend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed out this evening whilst dealing with personal matters:

As for Saka, the English starlet just continues to defy the expectations of a 19-year-old, with some of the standout statistics surrounding his latest display showcased below:

Special mentions should also be reserved for a trio of other Arsenal stars, with all of Cedric Soares, Granit Xhaka and Rob Holding having again looked superb throughout the 90 minutes at St. Mary’s.

Citizens run riot

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, whilst Arsenal were making their way back into the top-half of the Premier League table, Manchester City were retaking their place at the division’s summit.

Pep Guardiola’s men made the trip to the Hawthorns, for a meeting with relegation battling West Brom.

The clash of course came with the Sky Blues having been unable to call on star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who is currently sidelined with a long-term muscular problem.

To say that City managed just fine without the services of the Belgian, though, would be putting it lightly.

The Manchester giants looked absolutely irresistible this evening, eventually racking up 5 goals, to carry forth their fine recent spell of form.

All of Ilkay Gundogan (2), Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling were on target, in a Citizens performance reminiscent of those of years gone by.

Amid a host of stellar individual showings on the part of the visitors at the Hawthorns, though, it was Gundogan and Cancelo who stood out above all others.

In turn, some of the remarkable statistics surrounding their respective displays have since been forthcoming, as showcased below:

Also revealed online this evening, meanwhile, is the fact that City’s latest win has seen Guardiola’s men end the day at the Premier League’s summit for the first time in almost a year and a half, as the race for this season’s title continues to heat up:
