At the second attempt, Liverpool and Arsenal belatedly get up and running in this Carabao Cup semi-final.

The first leg was scheduled to take place in North London seven days ago but Liverpool did not travel due to a reported Covid-19 outbreak.

It transpired that they’d acclimated a number of false positives, increasing the cynicism, scepticism and suspicion surrounding the postponement.

Nevertheless, the tie will now commence with the first leg on Merseyside.

Arsenal have come through four rounds to get this far but have done so emphatically, scoring 16 goals and conceding just once.

West Bromwich Albion, AFC Wimbledon, Leeds United and, most recently, League One side Sunderland have all be swatted aside.

Liverpool meanwhile eased past Norwich City and Preston North End in the early rounds but needed a dramatic victory in the quarter-finals.

They fell behind twice at home to Leicester, 2-0 and 3-1, but Takumi Minamino’s 96th minute equaliser forced a penalty competition.

Caoimhín Kelleher was the hero of the shootout, saving twice, before Diogo Jota got the glory, converting to send his team through.

Liverpool are the joint-record winners of this trophy, doing so eight times, but this is their first domestic semi-final for five years.

Arsenal meanwhile are unbeaten in six domestic cup semis, last losing one to Chelsea in the FA Cup in 2009.

This commences a huge week for the Gunners who come into it having had their bubble burst.

Their last league game was that controversial 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City on New Years’ Day that ended the winning run.

But then, on Sunday, Mikel Arteta’s side were dumped out the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest, losing 1-0 at the City Ground without mustering a shot on target.

In the next seven days, there’s obviously the second leg of this tie with a pivotal North London derby in the league in between.

Liverpool meanwhile came from behind to beat Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Kaide Gordon equalised before a brace from Fabinho and one off the bench from Roberto Firmino saw them ease through 4-1.

Jürgen Klopp’s side are currently 11 points adrift league-leaders Manchester City so could prioritise cup competitions more as they target some silverware.

Will Liverpool claim a first leg lead in this one at Anfield?
