Luka Modric is reportedly set to join AC Milan after his long association with Real Madrid comes to an end.
Modric will leave Madrid after the inaugural edition of the expanded Club World Cup, which starts in the United States this month, ending a 13-year association that began with a move from Tottenham in 2012.
At 39, Modric is firmly in the twilight of his glittering career, which has seen him win four LaLiga titles, six Champions League crowns and five Club World Cups among a host of other honours.
But that has seemingly not deterred Milan from pursuing his signature, and it appears their efforts will be successful.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Milan have a verbal agreement on a contract with Modric after sporting director Igli Tare travelled to Croatia. The Rossoneri are said to be confident of securing his signature by Wednesday.
Milan are coming off a hugely disappointing season and will not play in Europe next campaign after finishing eighth in Serie A.
They did reach the Coppa Italia final, but lost 1-0 to Bologna. Their Champions League ambitions ended in the play0ff round as they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Feyenoord.
Milan’s only trophy came with a Supercoppa Italiana win over arch rivals Inter Milan.
Their below-par season saw Milan part company with coach Sergio Conceicao, with Massimiliano Allegri returning to the club on a two-year contract.
The likes of Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan have both been linked with moves away, but Milan will hope the prospective signing of a player of Modric’s pedigree can help put them on the right path towards a much more successful 2025-26 season.
