Kevin De Bruyne of Napoli

Kevin De Bruyne missed a gilt-edged chance to mark his Etihad Stadium farewell with a goal in the first half of Manchester City’s game with Bournemouth, but Omar Marmoush and Bernardo Silva put them on course for Champions League qualification.

De Bruyne will leave City at the end of the season following a decorated spell that has seen him win 14 major trophies.

He led City out for their final home game of the campaign, one which was lit up by Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike in the 14th minute.

But he fluffed his lines when presented with an opportunity to make it 2-0 from point-blank range from Marmoush’s low cross, the Belgian somehow hitting the underside of the crossbar.

Bernardo’s 38th-minute effort gave City control of the contest, from which a win would leave them needing just a point on the final day to be sure of Champions League qualification.

Despite the comfortable nature of the scoreline, De Bruyne will surely have left the field at half-time thinking about one of the most remarkable misses of his decorated career.
