Barcelona are reportedly set to sign goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol, and one of his soon-to-be former team-mates believes he will become the best in the world.

It was reported on Friday that Barcelona have paid the €25million release clause to prise Garcia from their neighbours.

Garcia made 140 saves in LaLiga in 2024-25, the most in the division, with his save rate of 75.5 ranking fifth.

And Sergi Gomez, who is also set to leave Espanyol as a free agent, heaped extremely high praise on Garcia in an interview with Radio Marca.

“He’s going to be the best goalkeeper in the world for many years to come,” Gomez said.

“He has qualities I’ve never seen in top-level goalkeepers. I’ve never seen anything like them. He has reflexes, courage, quality with his feet, leadership, and confidence.

“Joan takes 10 shots and he saves nine, but in training, we take 200 shots and he saves them all. If he’s given the opportunity, he’ll dominate world football from the goal.”

Barca are also attempting to sign Wojciech Szczesny to a new contract having lured him out of retirement last October after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a long-term injury. Szczesny kept eight clean sheets in 15 LaLiga games last season.

Ter Stegen has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs and Paris Saint-Germain, though the Germany international is said to be reluctant to leave Barca and angry at what he sees as an orchestrated campaign to force him out.
