Carlo Ancelotti has expressed his delight at taking over “the best team in the world” after officially assuming his new role as Brazil coach.

Following the end of his second spell as Real Madrid boss, Ancelotti will take charge of his first game with Brazil on June 5 when the Selecao take on Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier.

An away game with the side second in the CONMEBOL qualifying group represents a tricky first test for Ancelotti, who will then lead his side in his first home game as boss against Paraguay in São Paulo five days later.

Brazil have gone beyond the quarter-finals of the World Cup just once since winning their fifth title in 2002. They reached the semi-finals on home soil in 2014, only to suffer an historic 7-1 defeat to Germany.

But Ancelotti is relishing the task of returning Brazil back to the summit of international football.

“I have a big job ahead of me,” he said at a press conference on Monday. “I’m delighted, the challenge is great.

“I’ve always had a special connection with this team. We’re going to work to make Brazil champions again.

“I’m honoured and proud to lead the best team in the world.”

Ancelotti’s squad for his first two games saw him recall Manchester United midfielder Casemiro and teammate Antony, who is on loan at Real Betis. Neither has played for Brazil since 2023.

Tottenham striker Richarlison has also received a recall, with Ancelotti saying of his squad: “These two matches are very important. I have tried to bring in players who are ready and prepared to help the team win.

“People want me to do a good job and win the World Cup again. Because of what I have done in the past, they expect me to win the trophy, but I hope they will support the team because that is very important to have the support of the country.”
