Aggie Beever-Jones netted a first-half hat trick as England thumped Portugal 6-0 at Wembley in the Women’s Nations League on Friday.

The 21-year-old Chelsea striker opened the scoring just three minutes in, finishing superbly from a tight angle.

England doubled their lead less than two minutes later when Lucy Bronze headed home after Lauren Hemp’s left-sided corner.

Beth Mead, returning to form, added England’s third in the 29th minute, while Beever-Jones completed her hat trick by the 33rd, nodding in from close range before converting Leah Williamson’s perfectly timed through ball.

Chloe Kelly sealed the emphatic victory with a second-half strike, as Sarina Wiegman’s team recovered from the shock of goalkeeper Mary Earps’ international retirement earlier in the week.

Despite the turbulence off the pitch, the Lionesses looked at their best under their Dutch head coach.

The result keeps England second in Group 3 of League A with 10 points, trailing Spain by two after the world champions defeated Belgium 5-1.

England will travel to Barcelona on Tuesday, where a victory over Spain would secure a place in the Nations League finals.

Beever-Jones, who watched England win the 2022 Euros as a fan, was ecstatic post-match.

She said: “I’m just focusing on the current and the now, and everything else will fall into place.. As long as I am giving the right people headaches and making Sarina happy then so be it.”

In other League A matches, France and Germany both recorded 4-0 wins over Switzerland and the Netherlands respectively, while Denmark edged Wales 1-0 and Austria overcame Scotland by the same margin.
