Palace take control with ruthless first-half display
Palace made a strong start and were rewarded midway through the first half when Evann Guessand was brought down in the area by Dodo, leaving the referee with little hesitation in awarding a penalty.
Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up and calmly converted, sending David de Gea the wrong way to give the hosts a deserved lead.
That advantage was doubled just seven minutes later. A series of efforts inside the box eventually fell kindly for Tyrick Mitchell, who finished from close range to make it 2-0.
Fiorentina struggled to contain Palace’s energy and directness, with Ismaila Sarr and Daniel Munoz causing persistent problems down the flanks.
Despite occasional efforts from Albert Gudmundsson and Roberto Piccoli, the visitors rarely tested Dean Henderson in the Palace goal.
Fiorentina threaten but fail to respond
The visitors showed more intent after the break and came closest when Giovanni Fabbian struck the crossbar early in the second half.
There were also efforts from Albert Gudmundsson and Roberto Piccoli, both of which were comfortably dealt with by Henderson.
Despite enjoying more possession, Fiorentina lacked the cutting edge required to shift the momentum. Palace, meanwhile, remained organised and dangerous on the break, with Daichi Kamada and Adam Wharton controlling the tempo in midfield.
Sarr seals emphatic win late on
Any lingering hopes of a Fiorentina comeback were extinguished in stoppage time when Ismaila Sarr added a third.
The winger rose to meet a cross from Daichi Kamada and guided a header into the top corner, capping an impressive individual performance.
Palace continued to press even in the closing stages, with substitutes Brennan Johnson and Will Hughes helping see out the result comfortably.
