Lautaro Martinez did something no Inter Milan player has done for 14 years as they took a 1-0 lead in the Champions League quarter-final first leg with Bayern Munich.

Martinez put Inter ahead in the 38th minute at the Allianz Arena when he met Marcus Thuram’s neat lay-off from Carlos Augusto’s left-wing cross with an unerring finish with the outside of the boot.

It marked his seventh goal in the Champions League season, Martinez becoming the first Inter player to reach that tally since 2010-11.

Samuel Eto’o netted eight goals for Inter in that campaign, though the Nerazzurri’s defence of the European title still proved unsuccessful as they were beaten in the quarter-finals by Schalke.

Martinez’s goal significantly boosted Inter’s hopes of progressing beyond the last eight this time around, as they look to go one better than their run to the final in 2022-23. Inter were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the 2023 final.

The Argentina forward’s effort made it 19 for the season in all competitions, Martinez having scored 11 times in the league for the Serie A leaders and found the net once in the Supercoppa Italiana.
