Thierno Barry’s fourth top-flight goal of the season sent Everton seventh in the Premier League with a deserved win at Newcastle as the home fans booed their side off following a second straight defeat at St James’ Park.
Striker Barry tapped in from close range in the 49th minute after Lukas Hornicek, who made a string of saves to stop the Toffees from scoring again, could not hold Tyrique George’s arrowed shot from Kiernan Dewsbury Hall’s incisive pass.
Hornicek tipped headers from Jarrad Branthwaite and Jake O’Brien behind and pushed Dewsbury-Hall’s curling long-range effort over the target as the visitors pursued a second, although Newcastle thought they had equalised when Anthony Elanga almost prodded in Harvey Barnes’ inviting delivery, hitting a post and watching the ball spin on the line before James Tarkowski hacked clear.
Visiting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was only called into serious action for the first time with second-half added time looming, readjusting to repel Yoane Wissa’s shot on the turn with a leg.
Jacob Ramsey’s clumsy challenge on Harrison Armstrong’s ankle earned the substitute a second yellow card seconds before full time for Newcastle, who remain 13th and have only won one home league game this season, beating Hull City 2-1.
