Harry Kane did not mince his words following Bayern Munich’s Champions League exit, voicing his frustrations after the club failed to get past Inter Milan in the quarter-finals.

The England striker opened the scoring in Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw at the San Siro, but it wasn’t enough, as Bayern were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate.

Despite Kane’s contribution, the Bundesliga giants were undone by two goals conceded from set pieces – a lapse that Kane described in no uncertain terms.

“Football can be so cruel,” Kane said. “Conceding two goals from set pieces today is criminal. It’s hard to swallow.

“We’ve practised a lot with set pieces – both offensively and defensively – and we’ve been really good at them this year. But it was obviously a gut punch to concede two goals like that right after taking the lead.”

The loss means Inter will face Barcelona in the semi-finals, while Bayern are left to reflect on what might have been in their chase for a seventh European title.

As for Kane, his quest for a first major trophy continues. However, all hope isn’t lost, as Bayern currently sit six points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, keeping the potential for domestic glory alive.

Despite the result, Kane pointed out that Bayern had done enough in attack across recent matches, though admitted their inability to finish the job would sting.

“Well, we’ve scored five goals in the last three games,” he said.

“It’s not like we’re not scoring. We had our chances, and in the end, we’ll look back on some of them. But it’s just tough now after we gave it our all.”
