Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United: Match preview
Will Tottenham Hotspur keep alive their hopes of ending their trophy draught?
Back in 2008, Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final of this competition, thereby lifting their 24th major honour.
However, 5,050 days on, they’ve not claimed any major silverware since.
In this period, ten different clubs have won a major English trophy, including Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Swansea City and Wigan Athletic.
Tottenham have lost in four finals in the last 13 years, the Champions League Final in 2019 and the showpiece of this competition three times.
The latest came as recently as April when Manchester City beat them 1-0 in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
Now though, all Spurs fans are hoping that Antonio Conte, who’s won eight major honours as a manager, will be he man to end the draught.
On Sunday, Conte continued his unbeaten Premier League start as Spurs manager in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were both on target in a game they really should’ve won, given how many gilt-edged chances they created.
Since Conte’s arrival, only five of Spurs’ eight Premier League fixtures have actually taken place but these have yielded 11 points.
In this competition, both previous rounds took place under Nuno Espírito Santo but they came through two tough ties.
First, Tanguy Ndombele and Kane scored in a 2-2 draw at Molineux before Spurs ousted Wolves 3-2 in the subsequent shootout.
Then, in late October, Lucas Moura’s header was enough to edge out Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor.
This sets up this appetising quarter-final clash with one of Tottenham’s fiercest rivals.
Under the lights, will the home fans enjoy some festive cheer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
Will West Ham enjoy a memorable derby win?
West Ham United supporters meanwhile love nothing more than beating Spurs.
The Hammers’ wait for a major trophy even predated that of their hosts; they last lifted silverware in 1980, beating Arsenal in the FA Cup Final.
Their last major final came in 2006, drawing 3-3 with Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium before losing that FA Cup Final on penalties.
Will the wait for a final come to an end in 2022?
Well, just to get this far, David Moyes’ men have won two of the toughest ties a team could be drawn in this competition.
First, Manuel Lanzini’s early strike was enough to oust Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Then, four-in-a-row holders Manchester City were held to a goalless draw at the London Stadium, so to penalties it went.
Mark Noble, Jarrod Bowen, Craig Dawson, Aaron Cresswell and Saïd Benrahma all converted from 12 yards as they get through 5-3.
So, obviously, this is another tough draw for the Irons but they’ll surely take heart from those impressive wins in the earlier rounds.
However, West Ham’s Premier League form has tailed off in recent weeks.
Last time out, a week ago, they were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal with Vladimír Coufal’s red card, for two bookings, not helping the cause.
So, the Hammers have only won one of their last six league fixtures, albeit that was a fantastic comeback 3-2 home victory over Chelsea.
But, more broadly they’re fifth in the table, through to the Europa League round of 16 and into this League Cup quarter-final.
Despite having set a very high bar in the last 18 months or so, this is still very impressive.
As recently as 24 October, Michail Antonio got the only goal as West Ham beat Spurs 1-0 at London Stadium.
Also, when they last met in a cup tie with Tottenham as the home team, it was a famous night for the Hammers.
They were 2-0 down before half time but roared back to win 3-2 at Wembley with Angelo Ogbonna scoring a fourth round winner.
Will it be the away contingent celebrating a semi-final place?
Tottenham Hotspur team news vs West Ham United
Spurs’ squad is somewhat depleted just now due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak
So, Antonio Conte may be unable to make too many changes to the XI, even if he might have wanted to.
Given that Pierluigi Gollini wasn’t on the bench at the weekend, Hugo Lloris is likely to start in goal.
At the back, Cristian Romero is a long-term absentee and Joe Rodon is reportedly set to leave the club in January.
Japhet Tanganga could come into the back three though, taking Davinson Sánchez’s place, alongside Eric Dier and Ben Davies.
After impressing on Sunday, Ryan Sessegnon could keep his place at left-wing-back with Sergio Reguilón missing out.
In the middle, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg might be back after missing the Liverpool match but, if he is, it’s more likely to be as a substitute.
Giovani Lo Celso and Oliver Skipp though are set to come into the team, alongside Tanguy Ndombele, taking the places of Harry Winks and Dele.
In attack, Steven Bergwijn or Lucas are options but Conte is expected to deploy Tottenham’s deadly duo of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.
Kane has scored 11 goals against West Ham in 18 appearances, only netting more often against Everton and Leicester.
Will Spurs reach the semi-finals?
West Ham United team news vs Tottenham Hotspur
West Ham United too, having not played for seven days, are also likely to name a strong XI.
In goal, Alphonse Areola, who’s started five Europa League and both Carabao Cup games this season, will deputise for Łukasz Fabiański again.
At the back is where David Moyes is short of options with their entire first-choice back four unavailable.
Centre-backs Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna as well as Aaron Cresswell are injured while Vladimír Coufal is suspended.
So, Ben Johnson and Arthur Masuaku will deputise at full-back with Issa Diop and Craig Dawson in the middle.
These absences only heighten the importance of midfield duo Declan Rice and Tomáš Souček.
This is Mark Noble’s final season as a player but, despite starting in the previous two rounds, there’s no room for sentiment here.
Further forward, Pablo Fornals, Jarrod Bowen and third round goalscorer Manuel Lanzini appear to be Moyes’ first picks at the moment.
Saïd Benrahma will therefore miss out, sat next to Nikola Vlašić and Andriy Yarmolenko who are more familiar with being substitutes.
Michail Antonio, as always, will lead the line.
The Jamaican international got the only goal when these two met as recently as late-October.
Antonio also became the first visiting player to score a winning goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, scoring in another 1-0 win on 27 April 2019.
Will the away fans be celebrating again?
