Betting Tip Prediction: Netherlands 2 – 0 Ukraine

The Netherlands welcome Ukraine to the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam on Sunday for this Euro 2020 match.

The Dutch are one of the competition’s favourites at 14/1, despite the absence of Virgil van Dijk. Ukraine are considered one of the dark horses capable of an upset at 50/1 to win the tournament.

The Netherlands won the only previous match between these nations on home soil. Odds of 8/13 are available for any home win.

These nations played out a 1-1 draw when they last met back in 2010. Odds of 27/10 are available if you see Netherlands and Ukraine cancelling each other out on Sunday.

Ukraine have never beaten the Dutch in men’s international football. Odds of 5/1 are available to do so for the first time here.

Recommended Netherlands vs Ukraine betting tips

3-0 Netherlands win. Netherlands’ only victory over Ukraine came back in 2008 by a scoreline of 3-0. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 12/1.

1-1 draw. The last time these nations met back in 2010 they played out a 1-1 draw. Ukraine had drawn their last four internationals prior to their two Euro 2020 warm-up victories by the same 1-1 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 7/1.

0-1 Ukraine win. Ukraine’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland will likely be the blueprint they wish to follow at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. You can back them at 12/1 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals. Netherlands matches have typically been full of goals with the 2-0 win over Latvia being the only under 2.5 goals game in the last 7. The Dutch are averaging over 4 goals per game in their last 7 matches and you can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 6/5 for over 2.5 goals.

Memphis First Goalscorer. Memphis’ 20 goals for Lyon in Ligue 1 this season has seen the Dutch forward linked with Barcelona. The 27-year-old has 5 goals in his last 3 international matches, including scoring in each of the Netherlands ’ warm-up games. Memphis is 15/4 to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 13/10 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Ukraine.

Netherlands vs Ukraine betting tips: Match preview

There will always be a concern when a manager changes his team’s system close to a major tournament. So, when Frank de Boer opted to bin the 4-at-the-back that had served the Dutch so well since late 2018 just 1 month before a major tournament kicks off, it will have raised more than a few eyebrows.

Questions will be asked whether 2 warm-up games are sufficient preparation to help the players adjust to a different formation. The fact the Netherlands struggled against Scotland will simply add weight to the suggestion that now wasn’t the time for such a major change.

However, 3-at-the-back is the archetypal Dutch system. It is likely every player in their squad is very comfortable with this formation from playing at Dutch academies in their developmental years and it won’t take long for them to fall back into the groove.

Shevchenko’s Ukraine

Similar to de Boer, it seems Andriy Shevchenko will change Ukraine’s system for this tournament. The 3-4-3 that earned them a run of 1-1 draws in the World Cup Qualifiers back in March against France, Finland and Kazakhstan was consigned to the scrap-heap for their Euro 2020 warm-up matches.

Unlike the Netherlands though, this change was simply reverting back to the formation they were using throughout 2020. Their 6 defeats in 8 matches during 2020 was clearly a warning sign to Shevchenko that a more defensive system would be needed in the knockout rounds of the Euros.

This gives Ukraine two systems to switch between during the competition depending on circumstances. It is possible we see the 4-1-4-1 formation used during the group matches, where Ukraine likely need just 4 points to progress. Therefore, at attacking and securing at least 1 victory is essential. Then, they will revert to the 3-4-2-1 which made them difficult to beat for France at the start of this year in the knockout stages.

Netherlands team news vs Ukraine

Frank de Boer used a 4-3-3 in the last competitive matches of the Netherlands back in March. However, they lined up with 3 at the back in the two Euro 2020 warm-up matches, looking far from convincing against Scotland. Which system will they opt with for the Euros though?

Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was excluded from the Netherlands final Euro 2020 squad due to a positive COVID-19 result. This has created a battle for the #1 jersey between Tim Krul and Maarten Stekelenburg with them each starting in one of the warm-up matches. Which did enough to convince de Boer to start with them against Ukraine?

No Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the Netherland’s opening match of Euro 2020 due to a groin injury. The 21-year-old was not involved in the two-way match in training and finished the session separate from the rest of the group. This suggests only a minor problem though, likely causing him to only miss one match for the Netherlands. Daley Blind or Nathan Ake are the most likely to replace de Ligt from the side.

Except for de Ligt, the XI is expected to remain unchanged from the side that started the Georgia match. Although, youngsters Teun Koopmeiners, Ryan Gravenberch, and Donyell Malen will be hoping to get a shot from the bench to earn a place over veterans Weghorst (above) and de Roon.

Ukraine team news vs Netherlands

Andriy Shevchenko has also swapped systems just before the tournament. Contrary to the Netherlands, they are moving from 3 to 4 at the back. The 4-1-4-1 system that earned back-to-back draws in the last two warm-up matches seems likely to remain here.

Ukraine have also changed their goalkeeper, with a different player starting in each of their 3 warm-up games. Georgiy Bushchan had the #1 jersey in the World Cup Qualifiers in March and it will likely be his to lose when the tournament starts after a clean sheet against Northern Ireland.

Injury concerns for Ukraine

Viktor Tsyhankov hasn’t featured in either of Ukraine’s final two warmup matches after his last-gasp equaliser against Bahrain in May. Whatever knock has kept him out of those matches hasn’t been serious enough to warrant a replacement player being called up. Still, it is unlikely the right-winger would start on Sunday if available, with West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko the clear first-choice in his position.

Like Tsyhankov, Oleksandr Tymchyk hasn’t been involved in Ukraine’s final two warmup matches. The right-back lasted 78 minutes against Bahrain before being withdrawn. Oleksandr Karavaev is first-choice at right-back for both club and country and would start ahead of Tymchyk even if available.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has become Manchester City’s first-choice left-back this season. However, he starts in midfield for Ukraine, replacing Mykola Shaparenko for the side that started against Northern Ireland.
