Another of Europe’s giants make the trip to Andorra la Vella but will it be a similar story for the hosts?

In their history, the Tricolors have now played 130 competitive matches, losing 116 and winning just four.

In the 2020 edition of the Nations League, they finished bottom of their League D group, meaning they came last in the overall-rankings.

However, one of their rare victories did come in this campaign just last month.

Marc Vales scored twice in six minutes, both from corners, as they beat San Marino 2-0 at home.

Their only victories before this came against Macedonia in 2004, Hungary in 2017 and Moldova in 2019, all at home.

This does though suggest victories are becoming more frequent, if not quite a regular occurrence.

Koldo Álvarez’s side have lost their other five games in Qatar 2022 qualifying including a 4-0 defeat at Wembley and a 2-1 reverse in Hungary last month.

To summarise, Andorra are very much the archetypal international football minnows so will not cause England any problems in this fixture.

Koldo may well have his eyes on their next fixture, coming up on Tuesday, against San Marino at Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle.

Before then, can they keep the score down at Estadi Nacional?

Will England run riot in Andorra?

As for England, they’re hoping to have their ticket to Qatar rubber-stamped by the conclusion of this international window.

The Three Lions dropped points for the first time on matchday six, drawing 1-1 with second-seeds Poland at Stadion Narodowy.

Harry Kane opened the scoring, his effort swerving in from long-range, only for the home side to equaliser in the 93rd minute.

Nevertheless, before this, Gareth Southgate’s side had won all five matches so are four points clear at the top of Group I.

Their most impressive victory of the five came at the start of last month, hammering Hungary 4-0 in-spite of a torrent of racist abuse and plastic cups coming their way.

Raheem Sterling, Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice all on target at Puskás Aréna.

So England currently occupy top spot, four clear of Albania, five above Poland and six above Hungary.

If the Three Lions win this one and then beat the Hungarians at Wembley on Tuesday, they’ll be guaranteed a place at the World Cup with two games to spare.

Under Southgate, England reached the semi-finals of World Cup 2018 and Nations League 2019 before going one better this summer.

Wins over Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Ukraine and then Denmark at Euro 2020 took England to their first major final for 55 years.

There, they took the lead after 117 seconds through Luke Shaw before drawing 1-1 with Italy and losing on penalties at Wembley.

This though continued the upward trajectory so now England are aiming to complete the assent and claim World Cup glory in 2022.

Of course, they have to qualify first.

The Three Lions have won all five previous meetings with Andorra, scoring 20 and conceding none.

Will this trend continue?

Despite having a much more winnable game in San Marino on Tuesday, Koldo Álvarez will name his strongest XI for this one.

His entire squad, bar one, play their club football in the domestic league or Spain’s third/ fourth divisions.

Andorra’s Primera Divisió is currently ranked the 54th best league in Europe, out of 55.

The one exception is Marc Vales who’s club Sandefjord are currently 11th in Norway’s top-tier the Eliteserien.

Vales, who scored twice in the win over San Marino last month, was suspended for their defeat in Hungary but is available one again.

He’ll be apart of their usual back five which is depleted.

Albert Alavedra, Moisés San Nicolás and Márcio Vieira are all suspended after picking up their second yellow cards of the campaign in Budapest.

So, Emili García and Max Llovera will probably get the nod at the back.

39 year old Marc Pujol could start in midfield.

He made his international debut in 2000, amassing 78 caps to date, but only won his first league title in 2019/20 with current club Inter Club d’Escaldes.

Ricard Fernández, also known as Cucu, will lead the line looking for his first international goal.

Cristian Martínez is the top scorer in the squad with five, the last of which was a brace in Albania almost two years ago.

Will this team of part-timers be competitive against the European Championship finalists?

Last month, Gareth Southgate made 11 changes for the home game against Andorra.

Although, that was largely because it came between two tough away games, in Hungary and Poland, for which he named the same XI.

Even with only two fixtures this month, an experimental line-up is likely to be utilised in Andorra.

Sam Johnstone won just his second cap in the reverse fixture with Jordan Pickford rested.

However, Aaron Ramsdale could be given his senior debut after impressing with new club Arsenal this season.

At the back, there’s no Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James or Harry Maguire due to injury.

So, Kieran Trippier and Ben Chilwell could start at full-back with first-picks Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw rested.

In the middle, Fikayo Tomori’s outstanding performances for A.C. Milan in 2021 could see him win his second cap, almost two years after his first.

Conor Coady could be alongside with John Stones and Tyrone Mings set aside for Tuesday, the latter filling in for Maguire.

In midfield, Kalvin Phillips has pulled out due to injury and the FA have agreed to give Jude Bellingham a rest.

So, Jordan Henderson could captain the side with late call-up James Ward-Prowse in the other midfield position.

Phil Foden is in line to win his tenth cap in the number ten role, looking to add to his two England goals, both of which came against Iceland 11 months ago.

Mason Mount isn’t likely to feature having only just come back from injury at Chelsea.

Out-wide, Manchester City duo Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish were the first-picks in September and that’s likely to continue against Hungary.

So, it’ll be two of Bukayo Saka, Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho who start in this one; Saka and Lingard both scored in the reverse fixture.

In attack, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Marcus Rashford are injured and Mason Greenwood still hasn’t been included in a squad since November 2020.

Patrick Bamford led the line when Andorra visited Wembley, his debut coming on his birthday, but hasn’t been included this time.

Given that Harry Kane isn’t likely to start, either one of Ollie Watkins or Tammy Abraham will deputise.

Abraham appears to have the edge having scored four times for new club Roma this season, twice in Serie A and twice in the Europa Conference League.

The 24 year old has six England caps to his name with his only international goal coming against Montenegro 23 months ago.

Whoever Southgate puts out should swat aside Andorra.
