England v Slovenia match preview
England will be all-but mathematically guaranteed a place in the knockout stage of Euro Under-21 if they secure a second consecutive win to start the finals by beating Slovenia at Stadion pod Zoborom on Sunday.
“There’s definitely no way we’ll be overlooking Slovenia,” head coach Lee Carsley told Uefa after his side’s opening 3-1 win over Czechia.
“We’ve seen a lot of them and they’re a good, well organised team. I definitely expect us to keep improving, the longer we can stay in the tournament.”
Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott struck a clinical opener for the Young Lions against Czechia. “It’s a very quick turnaround with not too much time to think about what’s to come,” said the winger.
“You just need to go into games, hopefully get the job done and worry about things afterwards.”

Nick Woltemade’s hat-trick condemned Slovenia to a 3-0 defeat against Germany. “The first match against a big national team is behind us,” said coach Andrej Razdrh.
“Now we have the second one and we hope to spring a surprise. We’ve analysed what went wrong against Germany, and many things can be fixed.
“Some things we can influence, some others are a little difficult. But I want us to get into a position where we can make any opponents a little nervous.”
Captain Martin Turk pointed out that Slovenia have a draw and a win in their last two meetings with England. “None of us are thinking that our campaign is over yet,” added the goalkeeper.
“We know what demanding opponents England are, but everyone in our dressing room believes in success. It is one game, 90 minutes, and we will leave our hearts on the pitch.”
England v Slovenia team news
Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Tottenham Hotspur’s Dane Scarlett have not joined England at the tournament because of medical issues.
Carsley may be tempted to shuffle his forward line, with Arsenal sensation Ethan Nwaneri proving an immediate threat as a late substitute against Czechia.
Marcel Ratnick is not involved for Slovenia because the centre-back joined UAE club Al-Ain this month and is playing at the Fifa Club World Cup.
Striker Nejc Gradisar is also at the tournament in the US, coming on as a 79th-minute substitute for Al-Ahly as the Egyptian team drew the opening game 0-0 with Inter Miami.

England v Slovenia prediction
The holders will be wary of Slovenia’s unbeaten record against them in competitive meetings, recovering from goals by Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer to draw 2-2 at home in 2023 qualifying before winning 2-1 in Huddersfield in the return game.
Slovenia also came back from 2-0 behind to draw 2-2 at home to England in their previous encounter – a friendly in October 2019 – but it is hard to look beyond the start the teams made at the 2025 finals.
England survived several first-half scares against Czechia before showing the quality that allows them to eclipse the most stubborn of opponents. Expect them to do so again here, winning 2-1.
