Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala was rushed to hospital after suffering a severe left ankle injury during Saturday’s Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
The 22-year-old midfielder went down late in the first half following a 50-50 collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The incident, which looked grotesque on first viewing, was not replayed on the stadium’s big screens at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed Musiala’s condition post-match, saying: “For me, this isn’t a result of constant playing,” Eberl said.
“It is more of an accident, it happened and this is obviously bad for us.”
Head coach Vincent Kompany also addressed the situation: “It didn’t look good,” he admitted.
“If I’m just watching the images, it looked like an ankle injury of some kind but I’m not going to make a diagnosis here.

“When I’m sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment it’s not the result… it’s the fact that it happened to someone that enjoys the game so much, but he’s also very important for us.”
Musiala, who has scored 20 goals this season across all competitions, was replaced by Serge Gnabry at half-time with the score still level. PSG eventually secured a 2-0 win despite finishing the game with nine players.
PSG’s Desire Doue said: “We told him he has our support… we want everything to go well for Jamal in his rehabilitation.”
Achraf Hakimi added: “We support him and we want to see him back on the pitch soon because he’s a great player.”
Musiala, Germany’s 2024 Player of the Year, may now miss the start of Bayern’s next campaign.
