Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir: Match details
Match: Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: December 8, 2020
Kick-off time: 8:00 pm, December 8, 2020 (UK time)
Stadium: Parc Des Princes
Betting prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 3 – 1 Istanbul Basaksehir
Les Parisiens welcome İstanbul Başakşehir to the Parc des Princes in Paris on Tuesday for this UEFA Champions League match.
These sides met for the first time in competitive action back in October. PSG were the 0-2 victors on that occasion.
It was İstanbul Başakşehir’s first competitive match against a French side. Tuesday night will also be their first competitive match on French soil as they visit the home of the French champions in Paris.
PSG are no stranger to Turkish opposition though. Tuesday evening will be the 6th time they will face a Turkish side at the Parc des Princes. A 0-0 draw with Kayserispor back in 2008 is the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record.
Their most recent home match against a side from Turkey was almost a year ago to the day. They destroyed Galatasaray here 5-0 with Kylian Mbappé having a hand in four of the five goals.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir: What are the betting odds?
PSG won the previous match between these sides in Istanbul back in October. They also won their last Group H match here 1-0 against Leipzig. They start the match as the huge 1/8 on favourites to win on Tuesday evening, winning Group H in the process.
Istanbul Basaksehir are searching for their first away win in Champions League history. They have lost their previous two Champions League away-days to both Leipzig and Manchester United. Their large odds of 14/1 suggest they aren’t expected to pick up that elusive away win on Tuesday.
A point would be enough to see PSG through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Odds of 8/1 are available for them to play for that point Tuesday evening.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir: Recommended bets
PSG won 0-2 in İstanbul when these sides met back in October. A repeat of this score on Tuesday is available at odds of 13/2.
İstanbul Başakşehir’s only win in the Champions League was a 2-1 victory over Manchester United. You can back them at 40/1 to beat PSG by the same scoreline here on Tuesday.
Başakşehir’s matches in the Champions League this season have typically been high-scoring affairs. Each of their last 3 matches have finished with over 2.5 goals and they are averaging nearly 4 goals per game overall. You can back another high scoring game here on Tuesday with odds of 3/10 on for over 2.5 goals.
Group H Qualification Scenarios
The only guarantees from Group H are that Istanbul Basaksehir will finish bottom of the group, exiting European competition after Tuesday’s matches.
That means all three of PSG, Manchester United and RB Leipzig will be in the draw for the knockout stages of the European competitions come March.
But how can they guarantee their place in the Champions League draw rather than dropping down to the Europa League?
Paris Saint Germain
While three teams share top-spot on 9 points, PSG are in the strongest position due to their head-to-head advantage over both United and Leipzig. A victory guarantees they top the group. A draw would guarantee they reach the last-16 stage. Even a defeat should see them through as long as the United v Leipzig match doesn’t end in a draw.
If United achieve a better result than PSG on Tuesday night, they will finish top of Group H. Any win or draw will see them through to the Champions League knockout stages, due to their superior head-to-head over Leipzig. However, they will be in the draw for the Europa League if they suffer defeat in Leipzig due to PSG’s superior head-to-head.
Victory over United is the only way Leipzig can ensure their place in the Champions League knockout stages. In the case of a draw, they can only qualify for the UCL last-16 should PSG lose to Istanbul Basaksehir. This is due to both PSG and Manchester United having a superior head-to-head.
In the event that both Tuesday’s matches end in stalemate, a mini-league is created only for the head-to-head matches involving United, PSG and Leipzig. United would then top the group, with PSG in second place and Leipzig last.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir: Match preview
On pure talent alone, there can only be one winner of this match. However, as we have seen countless times in the past in this beautiful game – talent alone is not enough.
Player for player, there are few sides that can match the quality of the Parisians. Their forward line alone contains the two most expensive players in the history of football. With such quality and cost comes great expectation. Expectations that PSG have so far failed to meet in the Champions League.
The nature of their failure has seen many suggest they are a mentally ‘weak’ or ‘fragile’ side. They are ‘bottlers’. When success is in their grasp, they choke. Whether it’s throwing away a 4-0 1st leg lead over Barcelona. Or being dumped out at home by a weak Manchester United side.
Their efforts in this competition last season seem to have quietened such accusations over the summer. However, their recent defeat at the hands of Monaco having been 0-2 ahead has shown that fragile side once again.
Perhaps the key for PSG is Neymar (pictured above). While he was on the pitch in Monaco, he only managed the final 30 minutes of the match as he recovers from a groin injury. He was also absent from the side that tumbled out against Manchester United. His look on in horror from the sideline became the game’s meme-able moment on social media.
Neymar Jr was also on the pitch for the 6-1 collapse against Barcelona, but in the colours of Blaugrana. In fact, it was Neymar in the 88th minute, with his Barça side needing 3 goals, who scored twice before creating the deciding goal for Sergi Roberto.
The Brazilian international was at it again last week in Manchester, scoring twice and leaving the world’s most expensive central defender on the ground twice in the build-up to his side’s 3rd goal.
Tumbling out of the Champions League here, at home, to an Istanbul Basaksehir who have never won an away match in the competition, would likely go down as their greatest failure yet.
That won’t happen though, if Neymar has anything to do with it.
Paris Saint-Germain team news vs Istanbul Basaksehir
Thilo Kehrer has been ruled out for up to 4 months after groin surgery. He won’t be involved for the Parisians until the European football returns in March 2021.
Juan Bernat (above) has also been ruled out until March due to a cruciate ligament rupture. Although, that is an extremely optimistic timeframe given his injury. It is possible he won’t feature again for PSG this season.
Pablo Sarabia and Julian Draxler are also ruled out due to hamstring injuries.
Mauro Icardi has been in and out of the squad this season due to injury. He had a 5-minute cameo against Bordeaux at the end of November but was left out of the squad for the trip to Montpellier at the weekend.
Istanbul Basaksehir team news vs Paris Saint-Germain
Ugur Ucar, Kerim Frei, Muhammed Sengezer, Muhammed Sarikaya, Ravil Tagir, Mete Kaan Demir, Okechukwu Azubuike, and Cemali Sertel are not registered for Basaksehir’s Champions League squad.
Martin Skrtel is suspended for their final group game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Júnior Caiçara ruptured his Achilles tendon back in October. The injury is likely to keep him out for the rest of the season.
Irfan Can Kahveci played the full 90 minutes against Yeni Malatyaspor at the weekend. However, it is rumoured he suffered a groin injury that will keep him out of Tuesday’s match.
Mehmet Topal, Alexandru Epureanu, Boli Bolingoli, and Edin Visca all missed the trip to Malatyaspor due to injury. With Basaksehir’s fate already sealed, it is unlikely they will rush players back risking further setbacks.
