Malmö vs Chelsea betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

Malmö have really struggled in this season’s Champions League group stages and that was very much the case in West London 13 days ago.

On matchday three, the Swedish champions were demolished 4-0 by the European Champions at Stamford Bridge.

Andreas Christensen opened the scoring, his first for Chelsea, before a pair of Jorginho penalties and a delightful Kai Havertz chip secured the easy win.

For Malmö, they’ve now lost all three games in this group after a 3-0 defeat to Juventus and a 4-0 drubbing in Saint Petersburg.

That huge loss to Zenit, their direct rivals for third-place, means Malmö face a huge uphill battle to even get into the Europa League next season.

Back in the mists of time, the Sky Blues reached the final of this competition, losing to Nottingham Forest in Munich in 1979.

But, in more recent times, this is their third group stage appearance but, as in 2014 and 2015, they’re looking set to finish rock bottom of their group.

Back at home, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side are involved in a thrilling four-way title race.

At the weekend, the Blue Ones, just, beating IK Sirius 3-2 with Antonio Čolak snatching a 92nd minute winner.

This means Malmö are top of the Allsvenskan but both Djurgårdens IF and AIK are one point behind with IF Elfsborg just a point further back.

With just four games to go, Malmö can’t afford any more slip-ups if they’re to retain their title on 5 December.

In the Champions League though, to avoid finishing dead-last, they must beat Zenit at home and get at least a point here or in Turin on matchday six.

That’s a hugely daunting prospect but will it be a famous Champions League night in Sweden?

Will Chelsea win in Sweden?

Chelsea meanwhile should face little difficulty reaching the round of 16 and can take another step towards that target with a victory here.

The Blues have won both home games in this group to date, beating Zenit Saint Petersburg 1-0 and then, as mentioned, Malmö 4-0.

But, in between, they suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Juventus at Allianz Stadium, conceding 15 seconds into the second half.

So, if Thomas Tuchel’s side want to take top spot, they need to continue winning and, probably, beat Juve at home on 23 November.

Given that Chelsea have lost just four of their last 34 Champions League group games, it would be a major surprise if they didn’t win in Sweden.

Also, they’ve never lost any of their seven matches against Swedish clubs, easing past Malmö 5-1 in the Europa League round of 32 as recently as 2019.

Domestically, Chelsea are now three points clear at the top of the Premier League after hammering Newcastle 3-0 on Saturday.

Reece James scored twice at the appropriately named St James’ Park before Jorginho sealed the win with a penalty straight down the middle.

This means the Blues have won four successive league games, scoring 14 and conceding just one in these fixtures.

They’re also through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after another penalty shootout victory last midweek, edging past Southampton.

So, for that last eight tie, they’ll make the short 5.4 mile trip west to the Brentford Community Stadium.

In 2021, Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League before adding the UEFA Super Cup title to their collection.

Between now at May, they could win five more titles and, in this one, could all but secure their spot in the Champions League knockout phase.

Will the Premier League leaders be far too strong for their Swedish counterparts at Eleda Stadion?

Jon Dahl Tomasson has deployed a back three/five for Malmö’s last eight European games including qualification wins over HJK, Rangers and Ludogorets.

He’s likely to stick with that formation despite the three drubbings they’ve suffered in the group stages.

First-choice goalkeeper Johan Dahlin went off injured at half time at Stamford Bridge, replaced by Ismael Diawara, but should be fit for this one.

Anel Ahmedhodžić was suspended for that game, having been sent off in Russia, but will be back into defence here.

Bonke Innocent also saw a red card earlier in this European adventure in a 2-1 victory at Ibrox.

But, the Nigerian international is a key component of their midfield alongside Anders Christiansen, not to be confused with the Chelsea defender of a similar name.

Erdal Rakip could return to the XI, completing the trio, at the expense of Sergio Peña.

Antonio Čolak is their main goal threat and has been a revelation since joining on loan from PAOK in March.

His brace at the weekend means he’s now netted 13 goals in just 23 Allsvenskan appearances, a goal every 143 minutes.

The Croatian also scored five times in Champions League qualifying, including a quick-fire brace in Glasgow in early August.

Will Čolak become even more of a fans’ favourite by netting here?

As for Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel could be tempted to rest and rotate given how easily his side won the reverse fixture.

Édouard Mendy will keep his place in goal though, ahead of penalty hero Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa has helped his side win three shootouts already this season, against Villarreal in the Super Cup and then Aston Villa and Southampton in the EFL Cup.

In defence, Antonio Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva started as the back three in the reverse fixture and at the weekend.

But, the Brazilian, now 37, is likely to be rested with Trevoh Chalobah, 15 years his junior, coming in.

Club captain César Azpilicueta, who was previously undroppable, hasn’t played at all since Malmö visited West London.

At wing-back, Ben Chilwell has usurped Marcos Alonso as first-choice on the left and Reece James will keep his place on the right.

James’ brace at the weekend means he’s now scored four times this season while Chilwell has also netted four times for club and country since 2 October.

In the middle, Mateo Kovačić is currently injured so Jorginho and N’Golo Kanté will continue as the double-pivot.

Saúl Ñíguez, on loan for Atlético Madrid, has played just 238 minutes for his new club, 180 of which have come in the Carabao Cup.

That’s because the man who’s earned 19 caps for Spain is currently below Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley in the pecking order.

However, all three could be on the bench here as the attacking trio could be unchanged.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech, who came close on numerous occasions at Newcastle, will support Kai Havertz.

That’s because Mason Mount is a doubt and both natural centre-forwards, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, both went off in the reverse fixture.

Even without them, Chelsea should easily win in the Skåne County.
