Two of Europe’s heavyweight clubs go head-to-head on matchday one of the Champions League.

Despite the fact these two have won 13 European Cups, 32 continental or world titles overall between them, they’ve only ever met twice before.

Although, both came in Champions League Finals, the first of which is the most memorable final of all.

Back in 2005, at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı, A.C. Milan looked home and hosed when they were 3-0 up at half time.

But, of course, Liverpool scored three times in six minutes, getting it back to 3-3, before completing the ultimate sporting comeback by winning the penalty shootout.

Two years later, at the Athens Olympic Stadium, Milan got revenge, beating Liverpool 2-1 thanks to Superpippo Inzaghi’s brace.

Now, in the slightly less high-pressured environment of the group stages, who will win as these two great clubs reconvene?

Of course, since the Miracle of İstanbul, Liverpool have added a sixth Champions League title to their collection, winning the trophy in 2019.

Since that final in Madrid though, clubs from the Spanish capital have been their kryptonite, losing to Atlético in 2020 and Real last April.

But, Jürgen Klopp’s side will believe they can have a serious tilt at winning this competition this season.

On Sunday, the Reds swatted aside Leeds United at Elland Road with Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mané netting in the 3-0 victory.

This leaves them joint-top of the Premier League on ten points alongside Manchester United and Chelsea.

But, they will have to be on top form to even get through the Champions League’s group of death.

Spanish champions Atlético Madrid and Portuguese giants FC Porto complete Group B, meaning there’s no easy fixtures for any of the quartet.

Liverpool have won just nine of their last 19 Champions League ties away from Anfield, making home games of vital importance.

Will they start with a victory, roared on by the home crowd?

Will Milan win at Anfield?

As for A.C. Milan, they’re back in the big time.

This’ll be I Rossoneri’s first Champions League game since a 4-1 defeat in the round of 16 to Atlético de Madrid in 2014.

Kaká, who’s now 39, scored their goal that night at Estadio Vicente Calderón, a stadium that was demolished four years ago.

Since then, they’ve appeared in the Europa League group stage four times, losing to Manchester United in the round of 16 last season.

But, having finished second in Serie A last season, Milan are back but will they make an impact on Europe’s premier club competition?

Well, Stefano Pioli’s side have made a perfect start to the Serie A season including, on Sunday night, beating Lazio 2-0 at San Siro.

Rafael Leão opened the scoring before a Zlatan Ibrahimović tap-in, converting a low-cross by Ante Rebić, secured the win.

This followed a 1-0 victory at Sampdoria and a 4-1 demolition of Cagliari, in which Sandro Tonali netted an amazing free-kick and Olivier Giroud scored twice.

This weekend, they travel to Turin to play a Juventus side who’ve accrued just one point from three fixtures and are in crisis.

Before then, Milan need to get off to a positive start in the Champions League.

Il Diavolo are winless in their last eight trips to England since beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2005.

Will that change as they travel to Anfield for the first time?

Jürgen Klopp would certainly love to rest and rotate his squad for some of these Champions League group games.

But, with the group as competitive as it is, he can ill afford to do so.

Goalkeeper Alison has a very impressive record in the Champions League for Liverpool, keeping 12 clean sheets in 25 appearances.

In front of him, Virgil van Dijk’s partner right now appears to be Joël Matip so no place for Joe Gomez or summer signing Ibrahima Konaté.

In midfield is where the Reds look a bit light, particularly after Sunday’s horrific scenes.

18 year old Harvey Elliott has started three of their four league games so far but went off at Elland Road with a horrible looking ankle injury.

Such a shame for a young man who’d enjoyed a very bright start to the season but he’ll now surely be out for close to a year.

So, without him, captain Jordan Henderson could return alongside a scorer on Sunday Fabinho and Thiago Alcântara.

The latter has won 26 major honours in his club career including this competition in 2011 with Barcelona and 2020 with Bayern Munich.

Could be join Clarence Seedorf as the only players to win the European Cup with three different clubs?

The other midfield options are James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones and Naby Keïta.

Keïta was caught up in a military coup earlier this month so just your average World Cup qualifying fixture.

In attack, Roberto Firmino is injured so Mo Salah and Sadio Mané will flank Diogo Jota who scored four times in last year’s group stage.

Will Liverpool start this Group B campaign with a victory?

As for A.C. Milan, given that they’ve won every game so far this season, there’s no reason for Stefano Pioli to change.

Mike Maignan, who won Ligue 1 with Lille last season, is the number one these days.

He’s certainly got big gloves to fill after Euro 2020 player of the tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma left for Paris.

At the back, captain Alessio Romagnoli will partner Fikayo Tomori who made his loan move from Chelsea permanent this summer.

Full-back Theo Hernandez is one to keep an eye on as he gets forward on the left-hand side.

Franck Yannick Kessié will anchor the midfield but, alongside, the more defensively solid Ismaël Bennacer could displace Sandro Tonali.

Brahim Díaz and Alexis Saelemaekers could form part of an attacking trident further forward with Ante Rebić, possibly, moved wide left.

Zlatan Ibrahimović may return to lead the line after scoring in his first appearance for four months off the bench against Lazio.

Rafael Leão, the other scorer on Sunday, would drop onto the substitutes bench; Olivier Giroud is a serious doubt due to injury.

Will Milan leave Anfield with a positive result?
