Can Chelsea get back on track in the Champions League?

Last time out in this competition, the Blues were beaten 1-0 by Group H’s other heavyweight Juventus in Turin.

The only goal of the game coming just 15 seconds after the interval.

Nevertheless, there is no need for Thomas Tuchel’s side to panic as they have three points on the board, beating Zenit Saint Petersburg 1-0 on opening night.

Also, Chelsea and Juve are very much expected to cruise through to the round of 16, in which order is somewhat irrelevant.

Still, that’ll only remain a formality if they claim all three points here.

At the weekend, the Blues stayed top of the Premier League thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Ben Chilwell got the only goal of the West London derby but Édouard Mendy garnered all the headlines thanks to a string of remarkable second half saves.

In the Premier League, they’ve amassed 19 points, from a possible 24, only losing to Manchester City to date.

Between now and the next international break, Tuchel’s team face Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley so will be eyeing a succession of wins.

Will the European Champions now get back to winning ways in the Champions League?

Will Malmö win in London?

Malmö meanwhile are back in the Champions League group stages but they’re certainly not enjoying their return.

The Blues Ones reached the final of this competition in 1979, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Olympiastadion in Munich.

In more recent times, they appeared in the 2014 and 2015 group phases, finishing bottom both times.

This season, to get here, they had to play eight qualification matches, starting on 7 July, beating Rīga, HJK, Rangers and then Ludogorets.

But, so far in Group H, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have lost both games, first 3-0 to Juventus and then 4-0 in Russia.

In the latter, they collapsed against Zenit Saint Petersburg after Anel Ahmedhodžić was sent off in the 53rd minute with the score 2-0.

Given that Malmö and Zenit are surely going to be fighting it out for third, that is a crushing defeat.

The Sky Blues look set to maintain their record of having finished bottom of all three of their Champions League group phases.

Domestically, the Swedish title race is really hotting up.

On Saturday, they beat bottom of the table Östersunds FK 3-0 with Antonio Čolak, Adi Nalić and Anders Christiansen all scoring.

This means they are joint-top of the Allsvenskan but both Djurgårdens IF and AIK also have 44 points with just seven games to go.

Malmö host AIK on 27 October.

Before then, they worked so hard to be involved in the Champions League proper but are going out with a whimper right now.

Will Malmö win in England for the first time at the fourth attempt, most recently losing 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Europa League in 2019?

Thomas Tuchel does have some injury issues to contend with but, given that he has a glut of talent, will rotate in some key areas.

This surely won’t be the case in goal though with Saturday’s star man Édouard Mendy starting once more and Kepa Arrizabalaga not given a rare chance.

In defence, Antonio Rüdiger is injured and Thiago Silva isn’t likely to feature after a busy schedule for Brazil during the international window.

So, Andreas Christensen will be the senior man at the back with Trevoh Chalobah also keeping his place.

Malang Sarr made his Premier League debut at Brentford but could miss out here with César Azpilicueta moving back into the back three.

As a result, the more attack-minded Reece James would occupy a wing-back berth.

On the other flank, Ben Chilwell has started and scored in both of Chelsea’s last two Premier League games.

However, before this, he hadn’t featured in the league at all, playing just 141 minutes (15.6%) in all competitions

Nevertheless, he could keep his place with Marcos Alonso remaining on the bench.

In the middle, there’s numerous options but Jorginho could return, alongside N’Golo Kanté, at Mateo Kovačić’s expense.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has now started back-to-back Premier League games, last doing so for Chelsea in May 2019.

However, he could join Ross Barkley and Saúl Ñíguez on the bench, the latter has played just 121 minutes for his new club so far.

Mason Mount could come into the team, looking to support the front two of Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian scored four in his first four appearances this season but hasn’t netted in any of his last six.

Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech are injured but Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi aren’t bad options to have in reserve.

Will Chelsea have far too much quality for Malmö?

Jon Dahl Tomasson has switched to a back five for their last seven European games and will continue with that in this one.

Goalkeeper Johan Dahlin has played in nine of their ten European fixtures this season, keeping just two clean sheets.

He’ll do well to add to that here.

At centre-back, they’re without Anel Ahmedhodžić after his red card in Saint Petersburg.

So, Eric Larsson could come into the back three with Jo Inge Berget taking his spot at right-wing-back.

Bonke Innocent and captain Anders Christiansen, not to be confused with the Chelsea player of a similar name, will anchor the midfield.

Veljko Birmančević is expected to partner Antonio Čolak in attack.

The latter has scored 11 in 20 in the Allsvenskan and bagged five in Champions League qualifying, including a crucial brace at Ibrox against Rangers.

Will Malmö avoid a battering in West London?
