Chelsea vs Juventus betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

Will Chelsea book their place in the Champions League knockout stages?

On matchdays three and four, the Blues easily beat Swedish champions Malmö twice, winning 4-0 at home and then 1-0 at Eleda Stadion.

Despite having also beaten Zenit Saint Petersburg on matchday one, Chelsea are yet guaranteed a place in the round of 16.

That’s because, at the end of September, they were beaten 1-0 at Allianz Stadium by Juventus.

That’s just the fourth time in 35 Champions League group phase games they’ve suffered defeat.

However, it’s far from time to panic from Thomas Tuchel’s men.

They need just a point here to guarantee qualification before visiting Krestovsky Stadium to face Zenit in a fortnight.

Also, if the Russian champions fail to win in Malmö simultaneously, Chelsea will advance regardless of the result here.

But, having lost in Turin, the reigning European champions will probably have to win this one if they’re to wrestle top spot away from Juve.

It may not be case in Europe, but Chelsea do currently occupy first place in the Premier League.

On Saturday, they swatted aside Leicester 3-0 at the King Power with Antonio Rüdiger, N’Golo Kanté and then substitute Christian Pulisic getting the goals.

This maintains their three-point advantage over Manchester City, also remaining four clear of Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel will take charge of Chelsea for the 50th time in this match against Juventus.

So far, he’s won 31 of 49 fixtures, losing just seven, lifting the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup trophies.

The Blues could win up to five more trophies this season and the question really is how many will they win?

Juventus’ form meanwhile this season has been up and down to say the least.

After four Serie A games, la Vecchia Signora were winless, featuring defeats to Empoli and Napoli, which was their first start to a season since 1961.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side then won four in a row before a winless run of three games, losing consecutive matches to Sassuolo and Hellas Verona.

But, since October became November, they’ve enjoyed crucial back-to-back victories.

A 1-0 home win over Fiorentina, Juan Cuadrado with the stoppage time winner, was followed by Saturday evening’s 2-0 victory against Lazio.

At Stadio Olimpico, Leonardo Bonucci scored twice, both from the penalty spot, thereby bagging a first brace of his entire career.

I Bianconeri are back up to seventh but still 11 points behind the leaders.

Between 2012 and 2020, Juve won nine consecutive Scudettos.

This is remarkable given that the previous record was for successive titles was five, set by Juve (1931-35), Torino (1943-49) and Inter (2006-10).

In all, Juventus have been champions of Italy 36 times, 17 more than Internazionale and 18 more than A.C. Milan.

Even last season as their monopoly over Serie A ended, under Andrea Pirlo, they lifted the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana.

But, European glory is what they’re really after.

Since winning their second European Cup in 1996, Juve have lost in no less than five finals, ending as runners-up in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2015 and 2017.

In more recent times, they’ve lost their last three knockout ties, crashing out to Ajax, Olympique Lyonnais and, last season, FC Porto.

This season, Allegri’s side have made light work of the group stages, winning four out of four.

The win when Chelsea visited Turin is, probably, their most impressive of the season; Federico Chiesa scoring just 15 seconds after half time.

La Vecchia Signora have also beaten Malmö 3-0, won 1-0 in Russia before a 4-2 home victory over Zenit Saint Petersburg last time out.

Paulo Dybala scored twice while Chiesa and Álvaro Morata secured the win late on.

This means the Italian giants are through to the round of 16 and even a point in West London would boost their chances of topping Group H.

Will Juve beat Chelsea again, this time at Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea vs Juventus betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

Given Chelsea’s healthy position in the group, Thomas Tuchel may be tempted to rest and rotate, especially given that they face Manchester United on Sunday.

Although, whoever Tuchel puts out will be apart of a very strong XI.

Édouard Mendy will continue in goal; since joining Chelsea, he’s kept 35 clean sheets in 60 appearances, saving 122 of 153 shots (79.7%).

At the back, 37 year old Thiago Silva could be rested which would see Andreas Christensen come in alongside weekend scorer Antonio Rüdiger.

Amazingly, four of Rüdiger’s eight Premier League goals have come against Leicester.

César Azpilicueta, who’s made 442 appearance for Chelsea, has been a bit part player this season, last starting a Premier League game on 16 October.

But, the Spaniard has started all the Champions League games so far so could complete the back three, taking Trevoh Chalobah’s place.

At wing-back, Ben Chilwell and Reece James have both been in terrific form this season and should keep their places.

In the middle, with Mateo Kovačić injured and Saúl Ñíguez nowhere to be seen, it’s likely to be Jorginho and N’Golo Kanté again.

Further forward is where Tuchel has a plethora of options.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Hakim Ziyech could all remain on the bench but Christian Pulisic, who netted on Saturday, could come in.

This would be his first start for anyone start since 9 September in Honduras.

But Pulisic did come off the bench in both of USA’s games this month, netting in the Dos A Cero win over Mexico in Cincinnati.

Timo Werner could also come in, back after injury, alongside Callum Hudson-Odoi, with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz dropping out.

In truth, it’s hard to predict Chelsea’s front three thanks to the outrageous options they have.

This’ll only be heightened when Romelu Lukaku returns to full fitness which could be in the next week or so.

Will the Blues beat Juventus at Stamford Bridge?

Massimiliano Allegri’s side also have a big game this forthcoming weekend as they welcome Atalanta to Allianz Stadium.

But, with top spot in their sights, they too will put out a strong side for this clash.

Wojciech Szczęsny endured a horrendous start to the season but has rediscovered his form and will be in goal once again.

At the back, Allegri switched to a back three/five for the first time this season on Saturday as they beat Lazio 2-0 in the capital.

It’ll be interesting to see if he believes that to be a winning formulae.

Regardless of how many centre-backs are in this team, Giorgio Chiellini will not be one as he is injured.

So, Danilo would be a make-shift centre-half alongside Matthijs de Ligt and scorer of Saturday’s brace Leonardo Bonucci.

Alex Sandro could come in for Luca Pellegrini at left-wing-back with Juan Cuadrado keeping his place on the other side.

In the middle, Juve do have options but Allegri could stick with Weston McKennie, Adrien Rabiot and Manuel Locatelli.

This would see Rodrigo Bentancur and Arthur remain on the bench.

Aaron Ramsey, who started both of Wales’ match this month, scoring twice against Belarus, wasn’t even on a substitute at Stadio Olimpico.

In attack will be Juventus’ best duo right now: Federico Chiesa and Álvaro Morata, the latter has scored twice in the Champions League this season.

Federico Bernardeschi and Paulo Dybala, who’d been outstanding this season, are both injured.

Moise Kean, Dejan Kuluševski and teenager Kaio Jorge are their other attacking options.

Will the Old Lady beat the Champions of Europe in their own backyard?
