Betting prediction: Atalanta 2-0 Real Madrid

A real underdog in Atalanta has an excellent chance of stealing one over against a side who many pre-tournament would have labeled as one of the usual suspects to make a deep run in a competition they truly own over the years. But Real Madrid’s selection issues give a near-fully fit Atalanta outfit a real opportunity to steal even more neutral hearts than they already have. The second leg could be another matter but on their home patch and capable of upsetting bigger sides, the Bergamo-based club is in with a chance to take the first-leg.

Atalanta vs Real Madrid: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Atalanta – No

It’s not a usual occurrence when you don’t bet on Real Madrid finding a goal in the Champions League, but given their current injury concerns, they could struggle on that front. The injury to Karim Benzema is a particularly massive blow, with the former French international leading the club’s goal charts in both La Liga (12) and Champions League (4). Atalanta’s ruthless nature when at home this season (just one loss in their last twelve home fixtures) for me makes them the favorite to potentially blank Los Blancos in the first-leg.

Specials: Atalanta To Win To Nil

Playing off the possibility of the decent chance that Atalanta could grab a win against Madrid is the fact that they could even blank Los Blancos given some of their absentee players on Wednesday. Stranger things have happened on tricky European nights, and at the moment, Real certainly seep ripe for the taking against a side who are strong at home.

Atalanta vs Real Madrid: Match preview

Everybody loves the underdog; a dark horse club that can spring a surprise against the established elite and write their own Cinderella story. For many, that club is indeed Atalanta, and their highly respected and seasoned headmaster Gian Piero Gasperini. La Dea has come out of nowhere in recent seasons in Serie A, finishing fourth in 2017 for the first time in their history. Their previous highest-ever finish in Serie A? Fifth, way back in 1947-48. There have been fleeting moments throughout the years, with the club finishing fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth during its existence, but the club has only reached European competition on seven occasions from 1963-64 to the present campaign; three of those occasions have taken place in each of the last three years.

When La Dea finished third in 2018-19, it resulted in their first-ever appearance in the Champions League during the 2019-20 campaign, one that saw them become a neutral fan-favourite when they fought their way out of a group comprised of Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Dinamo Zagreb. They would then get past Valencia in the round of sixteen, while nearly losing-out to Paris Saint Germain in a 2-1 quarterfinal loss after the resumption of the tournament in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak. In that same Serie A season, Atalanta finished third for the second year running and was officially seen as a legitimate contender to upsetting the established hierarchy. Now, up against Spanish opposition in the round of sixteen yet again, Gasperini’s task is a simple one; keep faith in what has garnered the club so much unexpected success in such a small space of time.

Though Atalanta is decent at the back, their real strength is their ability to get forward and create chances for themselves, something that Gasperini has received plenty of plaudits for. Domestically, La Dea has the fourth-best possession numbers, while sniffing-out the second-most shots per match in the league, ahead of Juventus, and both Milan clubs. Colombian forward pair Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata have formed a key partnership under Gasperini as well, combining for 23-goals in Serie A, and 30-goals across all competitions. German international left-wingback Robin Gosens adds another source of goals as well, hitting seven in the league up to this point, while the ever-present Josip Iličić has a knack for popping up with a goal when it matters.

Atalanta is very much a side that keeps faith in their approach under Gasperini and knows what they are about. This has been put on display on the domestic front recently, with the club seeing off Napoli both in the league and in Coppa Italia (4-2 and 3-1), Lazio (3-2), and Milan (3-0). Against a weakened Madrid outfit, their ability in the final third could see La Dea make the imagination run wild for the second year running.

Paper-thin Real Madrid must still find a way to perform despite the circumstances

With only eleven fit senior outfield players for their tricky away day in Bergamo against Atalanta, Real Madrid, and boss Zinedine Zidane may be flying too close to the sun in a round of sixteen fixture that has a real chance of ending in embarrassment and subsequent ousting from the competition. The laundry-list of players that are unavailable to the French footballing icon is substantial, with nine senior players now on the treatment table. That number includes Los Blancos’ season leading goal-scorer Karim Benzema, leaving Brazilian holding midfielder Casemiro as the biggest goal threat left out of the current options with his five goals in La Liga.

The run-up to their Italian jaunt has been good on paper, however. Madrid has won five of their last six matches in La Liga, closing the gap to city-rivals Atlético Madrid to just three points. There are not a ton of fantastic attacking teams in Spain, however, and the test to come against Atalanta is a real one. This sentiment was mirrored in the Spanish press recently, with AS claiming that Madrid has a firepower problem against a side that not only can score plenty of goals but highlighting their own struggles to consistently do similar this term. Without Benzema in the matchday XI, Madrid’s goal-scoring numbers are paltry at best. The aforementioned Casemiro is second on the chart, but beyond him, Federico Valverde and Luka Modrić have registered three goals. The likes of Eden Hazard, Lucas Vázquez, Marco Asensio, and Vinícius Júnior are all on just two, while likely Mariano – the likely starting centre-forward in midweek – has just one to his name this term.

The task at hand for Zidane is a daunting one; a difficult exercise in how he will be able to get the absolute maximum attacking output from a hodge-podge front-three that have not performed in a manner befitting the club they are currently employed in. Part of this can surely be down to Zidane himself, and though Madrid is sitting in a strong position in the league warning signs potentially began to pop up during the group stage. Finding just eleven goals in six outings (the second-worst of any club that topped their group), the thirteen-time European champions also allowed nine at the other end; the worst defensive record of any club who finished first in group play. There are real concerns in the Spanish capital that arguably the world’s greatest club may have an unacceptable performance when the round of sixteen is concluded; the threat of Real Madrid getting bounced from the competition is a real one. Madrid must find a way to perform, and if they don’t, it will surely be seen as inexcusable and the likelihood that Zidane would be out of a job is an almost near-certainty.

Atalanta team news vs Real Madrid

Gian Piero Gasperini will be thankful to have a nearly-full squad to choose from when they take on European giants Real Madrid.

Dutch international Hans Hateboer is the only La Dea player unavailable to Gasperini as he remains sidelined through injury.

Real Madrid team news vs Atalanta

Zinedine Zidane is in a world of trouble in the build-up to Real Madrid’s tricky Atalanta test as he is likely to be without nine players from his squad.

Eden Hazard, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Federico Valverde, Rodrygo, Daniel Carvajal, Karim Benzema, Eder Militão, and Álvaro Odriozola are all unavailable for selection.

Though Los Blancos can still field a credible matchday XI, their options off the bench are paper-thin and it’s hard to see what changes Zidane could call upon if it’s all going wrong at the Gewiss Stadium.
