Manchester United legend Mark Hughes has been named manager of League Two strugglers Carlisle United.

Hughes, who most recently managed Bradford, has signed a rolling contract to replace Mark Williamson who was dismissed last month.

Carlisle currently sit rock bottom of League Two after winning only five of their 28 games this season since their relegation from League One last season.

Reports linking Steven Gerrard to the vacant post surprisingly came to the fore last week following his departure from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

But the Cumbrians have opted for former Manchester United and Chelsea striker Hughes, who has been out of work since being sacked by Bradford in October 2023.

The 61-year-old lasted 18 months in the role, guiding the Bantams to the play-offs in his first season before he was dismissed the following campaign with the club in 18th.

Hughes has previously managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke and Southampton as well as the Wales national team.

Sporting director Rob Clarkson said: “I’m delighted that Mark has agreed to join Carlisle United.

“His experience and stature in the game speaks for itself. He is someone who will instantly command respect from all staff and players and I am really excited to work with him.

“The players we have here will suit the way he wants to play and I’m sure our fans will really get behind him and the team in our remaining 18 games.”
