Noah Okafor came off the bench to score a late winner as Leeds United beat Tottenham 1-0 at Elland Road, ending their five-match winless run in the Premier League.
The Switzerland international struck in the 79th minute after combining with fellow substitute Harry Wilson, rewarding a dominant second-half display from Daniel Farke’s side.
Tottenham struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the contest, with Roberto De Zerbi’s team unable to build on their recent run of three consecutive league wins.
The match was also overshadowed by two controversial first-half VAR decisions, including a challenge from Jayden Bogle that forced Mathys Tel off injured.
VAR controversy dominates goalless first half
Both sides made a cautious start to the lunchtime encounter, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested during the opening exchanges.
Leeds gradually began to impose themselves, while Tottenham looked to exploit space on the counter-attack through Mohammed Kudus and Omar Marmoush.
The hosts were left frustrated when referee John Brooks rejected their appeals for a penalty following an apparent handball by Matheus Fernandes.
The incident was reviewed by VAR, but the officials decided the ball had struck the Tottenham midfielder high on his arm, in an area not considered an offence under the handball law.
There was further controversy when Bogle caught Tel with a heavy challenge that left the French forward requiring treatment.
The Leeds defender appeared to step onto Tel’s ankle, prompting a lengthy VAR review for possible serious foul play.
However, the officials decided the challenge was reckless rather than dangerous enough to warrant a red card, allowing Bogle to remain on the pitch.
Tottenham manager De Zerbi was visibly frustrated by the decision, particularly as Tel struggled to continue.
The winger eventually limped off in the 43rd minute, with Dominic Solanke introduced as his replacement.
Leeds almost capitalised immediately when Bogle delivered a cross into the penalty area, but Lukas Nmecha could only direct his header straight at Antonin Kinsky.
Tottenham had an opportunity of their own shortly before the interval when Kudus flashed an inviting low cross across the six-yard box.
However, neither Archie Gray nor Solanke could make contact, allowing Leeds to escape.
Fernandes then fired well wide from distance as the teams headed into half-time with the score still goalless.
Okafor makes the difference as Leeds dominate
Leeds emerged for the second half with greater attacking intent and began to take control of proceedings.
Farke’s side pressed Tottenham higher up the pitch and enjoyed lengthy spells of possession, forcing the visitors to defend deeper as the half progressed.
Sean Longstaff came close to breaking the deadlock, but Kinsky produced an excellent save to keep the midfielder’s effort out.
Ao Tanaka also wasted a promising opportunity when he fired over the crossbar, while Nmecha struck the post during an attack that was subsequently ruled offside.
Tottenham struggled to establish any attacking momentum, with their midfield unable to provide service to Solanke and Marmoush.
De Zerbi attempted to change the direction of the contest by introducing Dejan Kulusevski, Conor Gallagher and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Gallagher provided some additional attacking threat, but Leeds continued to look the more likely side to score.
Farke also turned to his substitutes, introducing Okafor and Wilson in an attempt to find a breakthrough.
The changes paid off in the 79th minute.
Melvin Bard delivered a throw-in from the left, which Wilson controlled inside the penalty area before cleverly laying the ball into Okafor’s path.
The Swiss forward took a touch to create space before driving a powerful finish across Kinsky and into the bottom corner.
The goal sparked celebrations around Elland Road, although there was a brief delay while VAR checked whether Wilson had handled the ball during the build-up.

Replays showed no offence had occurred, and the goal was allowed to stand.
Tottenham attempted to respond in the closing stages, but their attacking play continued to lack the precision required to trouble the Leeds defence.
The visitors pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser, leaving themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks, but Leeds managed the closing minutes effectively.
Despite late pressure from De Zerbi’s side, the hosts held on to secure a valuable three points.
