Jayden Bogle escaped a red card following a nasty-looking challenge on Mathys Tel during Leeds United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred in the 34th minute when the Leeds right-back caught Tel on the ankle with his studs, leaving the Tottenham forward in a heap and needing treatment.
Bogle’s boot made contact with Tel’s ankle, raising questions over whether the tackle should have been punished with a straight red card for serious foul play.
However, referee John Brooks initially decided against showing the Leeds defender a card, allowing play to continue.
The incident was subsequently examined during a lengthy VAR review, with officials assessing whether Bogle’s challenge warranted a dismissal.
Despite the studs-first contact, the on-field decision was allowed to stand, meaning Bogle escaped punishment and Leeds retained all 11 players.
Under the laws of the game, a challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force must be punished with a red card for serious foul play.
However, VAR did not consider the incident sufficient to overturn Brooks’ original decision, leaving Bogle free to continue.
