Rangers beat Celtic for the second time in seven days to move two points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders as Ryan Naderi’s first-half strike settled the derby at Celtic Park.

A week after Rangers thrashed their arch-rivals 3-0 at home in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals, Naderi pounced when goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo pushed Kim Minsu’s long-distance drive into his path in the 33rd minute.

Celtic had a fifth-minute volley by Auston Trusty disallowed for offside against Liam Scales and hit the bar through Kieran Tierney’s thunderous shot before the opener, but almost fell further behind when Djeidi Gassama shot against a post during the first half.

Rangers’ Olwethu Makhanya had an exquisite volley ruled out 15 minutes from time because the defender was adjudged to have used a hand to control the ball.

Martin O’Neill’s side had won all seven of their opening domestic matches of the season before that defeat to Rangers, prefacing a tame 3-1 home loss to Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener on Thursday.

While Gers counterpart Derek McInnes will now hope his team continue their momentum in pursuit of the pacesetters, O’Neill is likely to be as concerned as Celtic’s fans audibly were by another listless and untidy performance.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd said he had “no idea” what Sinisalo was doing for his part in the goal. “Celtic have got problems in the goalkeeping department – no doubt about that,” Boyd told Sky Sports Scotland.

“That was terrible. The defence didn’t react. Naderi was off the back of [Benjamin] Nygren. As soon the ball came in, he was the first to react, alert and found the back of the net.”

Celtic made three changes to their starting side from their defeat to Ferencvaros: Trusty, Luke McCowan and Nygren came in for James Forrest, Oliver Sorensen and Haissem Hassan.
