Portsmouth 1-4 Arsenal: Report, result, goals from FA Cup third round 2025/26

Gabriel Martinelli scored a hat-trick as Arsenal recovered from falling behind after three minutes to thrash Championship club Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round at Fratton Park.

Colby Bishop’s first goal since August gave Pompey, who are a point above the relegation zone in the second tier, a shock early lead after back-up goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga parried Conor Chaplin’s shot but Andre Dozzell bundled in an eighth-minute own before Martinelli put his side ahead from Noni Madueke’s delivery in the 25th minute.

Martinelli shot against a post from close range and Madueke sent a penalty wide before the break, but the Brazil international slotted in Gabriel Jesus’s low delivery six minutes after the restart and completed his hat-trick 18 minutes from time, heading in Madueke’s corner.

Portsmouth vs Arsenal: Premier League side through in FA Cup

Depleted Portsmouth had lost their previous match 5-0 at Bristol City but made a memorable start in their attempt to change the club’s wretched record against Arsenal, taking the lead when Kepa pushed Chaplin’s effort into inviting territory for Bishop to send the home fans into wild celebrations.

That proved as good as it got for John Mousinho’s team, who joined a host of top-flight and European sides in failing to prevent Arsenal from using corners to telling effect.

Martinelli was involved in a distasteful incident in the 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool on Thursday when he attempted to push opposition defender Conor Bradley, who was badly injured, off the pitch.

The 24-year-old apologised for his callousness and ended the week in more edifying style with his first Arsenal hat-trick and FA Cup goals.

Portsmouth are next in action away to rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (15:00 GMT / 10:00 ET / 07:00 PT).

Arsenal visit Chelsea in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals on Wednesday (20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT), then travel to fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest in the league on Saturday (17:30 GMT / 12:30 ET / 09:30 PT).

Portsmouth team vs Arsenal

Midfielder Mark Kosznovszky and forward Florian Bianchini were missing with knee injuries as part of a long absentee list for the hosts, who made four changes.

Bishop and on-loan Ipswich Town forward Chaplin came in up front, with Josef Bursik starting in goal and Blair replacing John Swift.

Midfielder and captain Marlon Pack was back on the bench after a hamstring injury, but winger Josh Murphy and forward Callum Lang were out with the same problem.

Defender or midfielder Josh Knight (back) and striker Thomas Waddingham (thigh) were also sidelined, as was defender Hayden Matthews with an ankle problem.

On-loan South Korea wideman Minhyeok Yang had been recalled by Tottenham, having scored the third goal of his spell at Portsmouth with their 98th-minute winner against Charlton.

Portsmouth starting XI: Josef Bursik, Terry Devlin, Regan Poole, Conor Shaughnessy, Zak Swanson, Adrian Segecic, Andre Dozzell, Conor Chaplin, Luke Le Roux, Harvey Blair, Colby Bishop

Portsmouth substitutes: Ben Killip, Jordan Williams, Connor Ogilvie, Marlon Pack, John Swift, Franco Umeh-Chibueze, Ibane Bowat, Jacob Farrell, Makenzie Kirk

Arsenal team vs Portsmouth

Arsenal made 10 changes, with centre-back Gabriel the only player to retain their place from the draw against the Reds from their 0-0 home draw with Liverpool.

Winger Ethan Nwaneri made his first start for two months. Defender Marli Salmon, who turned 16 in August, became the club’s youngest-ever player in the FA Cup by making his second Arsenal appearance from the bench during the second half.

Piero Hincapie was not part of the squad, having been replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly during the second half against the Reds because of a potential hamstring problem.

Fellow defender Cristhian Mosquera and winger Max Dowman had ankle injuries. Full-back Riccardo Calafiori was sidelined with an unspecified issue.

Arsenal starting XI: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Ben White, Christian Norgaard, Gabriel Magalhaes, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Ethan Nwaneri, Noni Madueke, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal substitutes: David Raya, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Marli Salmon
