PSG v Spurs: Line-ups, stats and preview

Preview for PSG v Spurs

The jury is very much out for most Spurs fans when it comes to Thomas Frank. The feeble nature of Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Arsenal, not long after an equally impotent display against Chelsea, means the pressure is starting to grow on the Dane.

If he had to choose one fixture to avoid as he looks to steady the ship, it is possibly PSG at the Parc des Princes.

Frank is in a difficult position. Approach the game with a more attacking mentality and they could be torn apart by the European champions. Adopt a similar tactical set-up to that which failed so dismally at the Emirates and still lose – a distinct possibility given the resources at the hosts’ disposal – and the flak will only increase.

Frank was quick to apologise after the game on Sunday, and midfielder Joao Palhinha adopted a similar tone when asked to assess the performance against Arsenal.

The Portugal midfielder said: “We first of all need to say sorry to our supporters. We need a big reaction in the next two games. A big reaction because we have to show the team we showed in the past.

“The ways we conceded the goals, especially playing with five at the back, we cannot concede these goals. And coming here and being punished with four goals is not our level. We will get our level again for the next two games. The only thing I can promise is we will give everything to get the wins in the next games.”

The two sides met in the Super Cup at the start of the season – a game that pits the Champions League winners versus the victors in the Europa League. Spurs appeared on course for a surprise win when they led 2-0 with five minutes to go but late goals from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos took it to penalties in which PSG prevailed.

PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia said: “They play very well, they attack and defend well. In the European Super Cup, we lost 2-0 and managed to come back. It won’t be easy, it will be a difficult match. But we feel good, we are really ready.”

Team News for PSG v Spurs

If Marquinhos plays it will be his 500th appearance for PSG.

Fabian Ruiz, Bradley Barcola and Kvaratskhelia were all rested for the weekend win over Le Havre but should return.

Achraf Hakimi is PSG’s main absentee.

Brennan Johnson is suspended for Spurs after being sent-off in the 4-0 win over FC Copenhagen in their last Champions League outing. Randal Kolo Muani can play against his parent club.

It is likely Frank will revert to a 4-3-3 after the dismal experiment with wing-backs against Arsenal.

Spurs

Given how timid Spurs have been against both Arsenal and Chelsea recently, it is hard to see how they emerge with anything other than a heavy defeat at the Parc des Princes.
